Hi. I recently bought a used savage 4.6. It runs great when it will start. I've gotten maybe four good tanks out of it so far. After running for two hours it ran out of fuel. Filled it up and put rotostart on and it just spins freely. Went to lhs and got new owb and converted to pull start bc they say pull is better and makes the owb last longer. Now with pull start and new owb you pull the pull start and just hear metal clicking inside motor and it will not turn motor over all the time. When it finally catches you will get maybe three good pulls and then the clicking again. Any suggestions please

try taking off the crank case cover, theres a small pin that hooks into a groove in the shaft that the owb is attached too, and behind that pin there should be a small spring to keep pushing the pin into the groove. if it only starts sometimes and runs good when its started the problem is more then likely in this area.

Believe me your one way herring is bad. I would advise u to take it of the engine and put a pull start on the savage. I had the same problem with mine and it only had a 3.5 on it. Make sure you put a new one way herring on it. I litterally blew five herrings in the past week with my savage. I said fiddlesticks it and put a pull start and a new herring on it. Now it is a little hard to pull considering I just put a new piston and sleeve on the engine. And finnally make sure you don't pull the pull start all the way out or it will rip. I hope that this advise helps you because it definetly helped me.
