I'm thinking of adding a 3 speed transmission to the $500+ list of things needed to get my savage running. Funny how it started out as a $20 list. Ha ha. Anyway. I've always wanted reverse. Can you put the reverse module in the 3 speed??

I don't know. I would think so. I wouldn't do it. It is a rather large sum of money for something you probably won't need. I mean its good to have but its not really nessecary.

Well truthfully money isn't really a problem but I'm really tired of running up the street to grab the truck before the carb loads up and stalls cause I never really tuned it right and its in pieces so I can't.

Yeah. well if money isn't the problem then go right ahead. It doesn't really matter to me cuz something is wrong with my reverse setup.

Yes you can. I added the 3 speed kit and the reverse module at the same time. You also need an extra servo and 3 channel radio.

Rolex beat me to it... It's a great idea to add both at the same time, since you have to take the bottom shaft out of the transmission to do either. Removing that bottom shaft requires a pretty intensive tear-down.

Reverse Module

I installed the 3 speed along with the reverse module and a high end 3 channel radio. I was very carefull to get the installation correct as well as the servo for the reverse moduke. I my first test run I could switch to reverse on the first 2-3 trys before it would just free wheel. After the tear down I could only guess that the little gear that I was not able to remove must have failed. Has anyone had this problem? Is this thing any good or just a waste of time and money? PS: The 3-speed is great!

I have that and the 3 speed kit, but it hasn't been run yet. I think you might have gotten a bad one, since I've known a few to have it, without problems.

Did you come to a complete stop before switching to reverse? If so, then it could be that the gears weren't aligned properly, preventing it switching to reverse.

No Back up plan

Yes I was at a full stop! The center gear that allows for the reverse inside this unit is very small. maybe under 3/8" of an inch. Looks to me like it is going to be prone to this problem unless it is made of very hard steel! Looks like it is made of cast metal. The servo is set to be full right or full left with a flip of the switch on my Futaba 3PM Magnum radio. I made sure I had full in or out movement of the reverse module before I ran the truck both times.
I would like to know how others have made out with this unit.

Call HPI and explain what happened. They will probably have you send in the module so they can look at it. They will know it hasn't been used much and might replace it at no charge due to a defect.

I haven't had that issue at all with mine. It's been pretty reliable. Course, my luck, the next time I fire up the truck, the reverse module will shoot out of the top of the truck.
