I was just putting together the 3 speed kit tonight and was curious.. I did everything from the book since it was my 1st time even opening my savy tranny and had a question.. Theres these round parts with two allen screws in the top of them. (I think its the spot to do the shifting adjustment) anyway, when I was taking out the stock allen screws a small ball bearing rolled out from under the allen screw. Then when I took out the other one, there was a spring underneath the all screw. In the book I didnt see anything about this. It also didnt call for them when I put them back together.. Are these needed?? (By the book I'm guessing not, but I thought Id ask you guys who may have done it before) Also wheither I need them or not, what are they??

I just went ahead and purchased a complete set. I could take mine apart and see if you would like or wait for someone that has done this before to reply.

Thanks for the offer. Id hate to have a do that though. Worse comes to worse I can email Hpi. Thanks again though for the offer. How ya like the 3 speed by the way?

I tried taking mine apart but the allen screws are to tight to unscrew :ponder2: , good thing I don't need to make any adjustments. I have never looked at the one in the Savy but I have done the Maxx a few times. The spring most likely comes from inside the hub, there is an arm that engages to make it shift once the right rpms are reached and it is spring loaded. Without the spring it will have a hard time down shifting. I tried finding an exploded view but my pc is being stubborn right now, I'll check again later.

I figured since it was in the original set up they would use it in the new setup. I looked it over a few times and even had my dad look at it, and he thought the same thing.. weird..

As we already know, the spring and ball bearing definitley have to do with shifting timing and adjustment. I'm guessing here but if it was me putting the 3 speed together, which it might be in a few months, I'd put back the spring and ball bearing just like it was before. I figure that the round piece that the spring was in before can't be left with an unused open hole in it and then there being no way to make any shift adjustment. At least that's my logic. Let us know what how it turns out and how you like it.

That controls the arm on the clutch hub and it needs to be set correctly. They serve the same purpose as part numbers Z721, 86050a, and 86050c in this picture. Your truck will not shift properly if these parts are not installed and adjusted properly.

Thanks Ross! Thats exactly what I was looking for. How tight do ya tighten it, do ya know?

If it works like the 2-speed hub (which it probably does) then the ball should only be in the hole that puts tension on the clutch arm. The ball should be under the spring. I don't have a 3-speed but I have set these hubs in my Savage 2-speed and the 2-speed in an RS4 18ss. You should probably slowly turn it in until it seats lightly and then back it out about 3.5 turns. Tune the shift point from there.
