i stripped out the spur gear on the maxx this weekend. i am going to upgrade to steel now. i see robinson racing makes a 44 tooth spur gear with 18 tooth clutch bell. the original spur gear is a 54 tooth. is this going to give it better response?

No it will give ita slower response but more top end if you get a smaller spur. If you want more low end then a smaller clutchbell will give you that. I am not sure what the difference will be with 44/18 compared to what you have now, so it depends on your current gearing. 54/18 would be alot of low end torque though.

why spend $$ on steel gears, your just creating a weak link and that will be the tranny. If the mesh is set right and you have protection over the motor like forrm a roll bar to protect the cooling head from direct impact. You wont have this problem. I have been running the same spurr gear for almost 10mos with no problems. If you mesh isnt right or the engine gets cocked from landing upside down after a jump you will strip the spur. Get a good roll bar, set your mesh right and leave the spur gear plastic

well good point there 3.3 i did take a big impact on the cooling head and thats when it started. i will go with your advice. cheaper too!!! is there any way of making sure it is the right mesh or is this a trial and error type of deal

Slip a piece of paper between the clutch and spur, tighten the engine up against it, then pull it out.
