hey all, it turns out, once i got my sts 30 running, it can really do a number on 14 mm hexes, so i am upgrading to 17 mm. my question being, what is involved in converting to the 17 mm hubs. i am on a really tight budget right now, but i want to keep this monster running while i still have the weather, so thats why i am only going to 17 mm for right now, cause i found wheels that i can mount my original tires onto.
these are the wheels i am going to go with: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130135933625&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003
if anyone has any sugestions on 23 mm hexes for around this price, or any suggestions at all, please post 'em for me! thanks everyone!

which savage do you have?

the reason i ask is the older savages had the threads on one side of the axles reversed. the newer ones do not

hpi makes 17mm hexes that go right onto the truck with no mods, but you have to use different nutts. if your savage is older you will have to change two of the axle stubbs because the new nutts dont come in the reversed thread.

i am currently searching for some nice tough 17mm rims, it seems everyone skipped 17 and went strait to 23mm.... i to have a .30 and i know its going to destroy the 14mm on the big joes..

i have a savage 21, they really dont make those new nuts in the reverse threads? do ya think there is any possiblility of finding corresponding hardware at the hardware store? its just that i dont think that these wheels will last too long once i get the tranny set up, and i'm out of work right now.

i havent seen them in reverse, you can try to find them but there pretty weird looking. a set of stub axles shouldnt be that expencive though....

do you think it would just be smarter to save for the 23 mm hexes...are they more expensive to outfit? i'm basically looking for just plain black dish wheels...they look strong, and after all, its a basher, function over fashion! also, if possible, at least for now, i'm looking to re-use my stock tires...they still grip, and i am kinda partial to how tires look on anything. any help you can offer would be awesome!:thankyou:

here is the cheapest way to convert your savage over to 17 mm.
All you need is 86387 x 2 and 86393 x 2 and some set screws to fit in the stub axles. I know this works cause i work at a hobby shop and i just put these on my savage x SS and they work great hope this helps

so, i need a total of (4) of the hexes, and i also need (4) new axle stubs? or do i only need 2 axle stubs?

also, do you know how much stronger these 17 mm hexes will be on the rims? i have a pretty powerful motor, and i've only got about a gallon and a half on these wheels, and today all 4 wheels striped out. let me know, in your opinion, if it would just make more sense to go for the 23 mm's and be done...by the way, i like rocky terain, like in drainage ditches. thanks man!

You will need the shafts, nuts, pins, hexes, and hex nuts. They are way stronger than 14mm. I had these on my STS 30 with a P+P job with and STS 0702 pipe. They never stripped a rim or anytihng, now that was a test on the rims with that motor!!! I got some for sale if your interested with HD hex nuts. PM me if you think you want them.
