Why everyone hates traxxas servos ?

Amazon Servo.webp

Just hang out in the hobby, and the forums for awhile... I'd put RTR servos at the top of the "what gets replaced first" list.

Wow, about 20 combined years in the hobby with over 30 RCs, and I'm still a noob?
Ok, I guess I'll keep hanging in there until I'm more experienced and educated.

I've had bad luck with almost all of my Traxxas servo's I've owned historically every single one of them has broken except the ones on my revo, and I don't think those are gonna be staying around for too long.

I've run a semi-stock slash 2wd in a carpet racing league for almost 2 years...I had to replace rear hubs after 1st night due to getting slammed from behind, which broke both rear hubs. Sure I did the antifreeze break-in on the motor with my APS dyno and re-lubed motor bushings with my recommended ZMax added a Tamiya servo saver (that I purchased from a closing hobby store for a bag of 100 missing 2 for $5) they are HD and universal. Added a integrity steering rack but never changed servo until about 3 years later..
But Traxxas servos are known to fail fast but any RTR electronics are designed to fail

I know that 3 other members, whom have replied to this thread, have just as much time and own about as many RC as me.
Point being @RustyUs is that it's not a bunch of noobs talking out of our nether regions.
However, your experience has obviously been different, so it will be respected. Just don't dismiss others.

You should hang out in a forum a few more years, you might be able to mesh the gears in your avatar a little better. :D

Maybe its because its my first rc but I'm fine with their electronics lol I'm already building a wide monster slash and didnt really think about the servo. My main focus right now its on the suspension. I feel thats what changes the handling the most. I already have the wide arms but with the bigger wheels i feel a new servo is a must. I might get one anyway since its cheap. (Ill try a amazone brand).

What i dont like tho, its the play in the steering system. Is always like that ? When i hit something in a straight, the play make the car turn when i dont want to.

And hey !! I was going the make a new thread and maybe i will but since there is already a few experienced guy in this one i have a question about stance :

I want a bigger clearance. Sadly the rpm wide rear arms doesn't have the 2 holes near the chassis like the stock ones. I'm thinking about longer shocks but i only find amazone shocks and dont trust it. Any good brand ? Like 120mm-140mm ? I was thinking about drilling news holes in the shocks tower but it might break lol I want to try rear shocks in front. I can't go to high because of the steering links rubbing and the driveshaft over extendig and rubbing on the arm.

From your description, it just sounds like the servo saver(if there is one) just doing its job. If you're not familiar, a servo saver is basically a suspension system for the servo, so the servo gears don't take the brunt of an impact when the front tires hit or get bound up by obstacles.

I dont thinks its that. There is a little play in the servo it self but i feel its normal.

Theres some pic since i dont know how to put a video xd. Should be fixed easily with pvc shims.

Oh yea. Don't worry about the play. It's normal. My setup still has that little of play or slop I just forget about it. My setup is Traxxas aluminum bellcrank (upgrading to a hot racing one soon), rpm hubs, Traxxas aluminum tie rods, TLR servo horn and a Amazon servo.

Thanks ill try to fix the up and down play on the hubs (or bell crank not sure lol) because it dosent feel right to me xd but like i said i understand there is a normal play with the servo and I'm fine with it. Ill buy a cheap servo soon tho :p

My losi aftershock servos where not the best either and that is a very expensive truck back in the day. They all break and most stock servos can't take a beating and not break. Thats why we have aftermarket ones that are better quality and most of the time similar or cheaper price. I had no issues with my tamiya mighty bull servos though.

Always a good idea to have vulnerable parts on hand, if you want to keep the down time short. I'm fortunate I no longer have that problem; I have plenty of other toys to fill in down times 😃

Personally, I don't "hate" Traxxas servos. Not that I but many RTRs these days (especially Horizon Hobby brands, except for ProBoat)...but, when it comes to servos found in RTRs, I've actually found Traxxas servos to be considerably better than Spektrum servos. Spektrum servos are the ones I toss.

Traxxas servos, on the other hand, usually find their way into my lower-end kits, such as Tamiya kits. I even put a 2075R in the AE RC10B6.3 I built for my stepdad. Right now, I'm putting to build a new RC boat rescue platform, and I'll probably be using two of them for the "side gripping contraption" I'm working on figuring out. Truth is, Traxxas servos may be at the lower end of the spectrum, but they do have their uses.

I agree Traxxas servos are junk. IMO, 9imod brushless are about the best bang for your buck servo you can buy. Aluminum case, steel gear, super fast, super strong, quiet, and hardly pull any power, so batteries last a lot longer.

I feel we dont talk enough about driving lol I want to try a new one because its super cheap but unless i hit a curb with speed i dont see it breaking.

Thanks. There is so much options lol

If hard/bad driving was the case, then it should simply apply to aftermarket servos as well.
Also, my experience with stock servos also applies to rtr crawlers, and not just racers/bashers.
