I am buying an ESC for my 1/10 4x4 but I don't know which one to go with. I want to buy the Hobbywing SC8, but I also found the Hobbyking X-car 60a (2s-4s) brushless ESC. I only want a cheap ESC that is easily programmable and can take 4s. Would it be worth spending the extra money on the SC8? I don't care about waterproofing because I can do that myself.

I'd probably go with the sc8. Less likely to run into heat issues down the line. Also, it's possible that factory waterproofing will be more thorough than any waterproofing you do your self. I'd assume they would waterproof around the fets, clean the fets and then put the heat sink on.

I conformal coated my hpi savage flux hp esc (rebadged mamba monster v1) and I couldn't get the heat sink to come off. Even if I did, I don't know for sure what I'd adhere it back on with. Guessing there's a thermal compound or two out there that is also glue, vs the stuff for PC's that isn't a glue at all and relies on springs/clamps to keep things together. I did the best I could with a couple coats of the stuff up to the heat sink lip. Still, it's a second backup esc. I replaced it with a MMX that is waterproof as I didn't trust myself to not get the esc wet.
