What make one exhaust pipe better than another?

Its mostly do to with the shape. I'm sure some one can explain it much better than I could, but a steeper angle right after the header and a abrupt end to the pipe make for more torque, and longer more gradual changes make for more highend I believe. Also inner 'chambers' can change the power out put.

yea, exhaust has something to do with the bouncing off of waves from what I hear. The different shapes, like ribbed control the power in different ways giving it either low end, or top end, or neither and just harms the engine (homeade ones)

It basically comes down to this....the longer your setup is the better low end your going to have and the shorter your setup is the less low end but will have more top end.

To add to VB's post,

There are different ways to tune your exaust, one way is through the header. If you have a standard exhaust coupled with a piece of rubber between the header and the exhaust, you can simply move the exhaust closer to the header to achieve more low end. To get more top end, you simply move the exhaust further away. You still need to use zipties to keep the rubber coupler snug. Now if you have a one piece pipe then they make to achieve max rpm at either low or top end. They come in many different flavors by different companies.
