I picked up a Villain iv for free to take with me in a couple of weeks on vacation along with all the other toys. So far I have removed the esc and replaced with waterproof XL5, also replaced servo w/ extra waterproof 2056 servo. I am going to leave the twin 540's as they are because the motors and drive train all seem to work well. My question to Rolex if he is listening is when he had his what kind of batteries did you run? I have several 6 and 7 cell Nimh that will work all the way up to 5000 mah. I know that they had pretty low mah batteries in them back then so I am wondering if there is a need to run double batteries? Thanks in advance....

I ran 2 NiMH 3600s in mine. The mAH rating affects the run time. The higher the #, the bigger the "Tank".
I have a pair of 5000s that are going in my present boat project.

Good info. I didn't think of that, but I have one here, and it is significantly smaller than the stock unit. I believe it's probably made for 380s at most.

I want to figure out how to run a single BL motor setup...... maybe a belt driven feature....

Uhhh, the xl5 wont run dual 550 motors...... I've tried...

HMM damn not that them being 540's really matters but it looks like my plan has been foiled. I have the XL5 in there and just gave the throttle some movement and it seemed to rev them fine I wonder if I put it in the water if it will burn that esc out in a short time? anyway thanks for the info. I understood the impact of mah I just wasn't sure of the necessity of dual batts.

The problem with the dual motors with the XL-5 is that the dual motors Draw so much current, that the XL-5 wasn't built to put out.

There's really no need to swap out the ESC for the waterproof unit. I never had a problem with water getting inside the hull.
I thought about it, then realized that you CAN run with just one battery since there are two connectors Y'd into the controller. Your run time won't be long, though.

just test ran it in the pool with the current setup and one 4500 mah 6 cell, got about 10 min out of it before it started to slow down but it just isn't fast enough to be fun. I guess that is why all my electric vehicles are brushless and lipo. if you aren't going fast you are in my way:D I think I will just put it back to bone stock and give it to one of neighbor kids. I can't give it to my own son cause then I would have to spend the money to hop it up.
