I bought a savage x 4.6 a while ago. After going thru the break in process I then began the tuning. The truck then sat for a couple of months. Now when cold it is very, very hard to start but it starts fine when warm. The tuning is not completed and I don't know what to do. Please help
 
I don' t see how that flowchart helps. The truck won't even start.

That's not what your title or original post say. There's a big difference in HARD to start and doesn't start at all, mainly the starting part.

What is "a while ago", how long did it sit? Did the engine and tank have fuel in them while it sat? How old is the fuel you're using? If it's older, how was it stored? Check all of the basics, is fuel getting to the carb? Is your glow plug lighting?
 
I guess my second post should say i don't see how the flow chart helps my truck is very hard to start. The truck seems to start fine when warm. The truck sat for 2 months with no fuel in the engine or in the tank. The truck is new this summer, the fuel was bought with the truck. When priming the fuel does get to the carb. I did install a new glow plug after break in was completed. How often should the glow plug be changed?
 
Take off the air cleaner and drop a little fuel directly into the carb throat. Start it right away. If it starts and then stalls when that fuel is burned you have a clogged needle valve from sitting.

By the way, if it won't start, why does your first post say, "Starts fine when warm"?

So i pulled off the air filter and dropped some fuel in the carb and it starts like it should. What is the process for cleaning the carb? Thanks
 
Sounds like you're just not priming it enough. Get it cranking and put your finger over the stinger in one second intervals until it fires. Should take 3-4 seconds to start. If there was a clog, I'd think it wouldn't start at all or run really lean and erratic. To clean a carb, you pull the needles out and soak it in fuel over night. You shouldn't have any gumming issues in just a couple months. My rc10 sits for months at a time with fuel in it. Not that I recommend this!:) The rc10 is a beater. Another thing that would help is preheating the engine with a hair dryer. Especially if it's 55 degrees or colder.

When it finally does get running it does run very erractic. Makes tuning very difficult. I run it last night but it probably took 30-45 seconds of cranking to finally start. Ran very poorly when it ran.
 
Pull the carb.:) Gotta give us those details bro. Makes all the difference diagnosing problems. After jotting down were the needles are set, pull em and soak everything in fuel over night. Use copper rtv to seal the throat, pinch bolt and nut.
 
Found the problem. The hose on the exhaust ( goes to fuel tank ) didn't have a very tight fit. Trimmed the end and now starts fine. Ran three tanks thru,did some tuning and now runs great.
