I bought a 1/10 rally about 3 weeks ago. Day before yesterday motor went out and stripped spur gear at the same time. Trying to decide if it would be worth it to go ahead and upgrade to the momba monster as far as money is concerned, or just let traxxas replace the velineon. Need to know what should I make sure I upgrade along with the motor and esc, if I was to upgrade. Pretty new to brushless but so far I haven't heard too much good about velineon other than traxxas will replace it.
Fun little car, hate not being out in the field or parking lot with it. Which is also part of my question is the momba monster any more reliable than the velineon? I run my cars on pavement and fields about 50/50. Any possible advise much appreciated.

The Mamba Monster is an 1/8 scale ESC and way overkill for your kit. If the Velineon system is still under warranty then id just let traxxas replace it. I would also get a temp gun and keep an eye on the temps of your motor and ESC. You can also get fans for the motor and the ESC (if they dont already have them that will help with temps some if your having temp problems. I'm assuming running it through the grass probably over heated your motor which cause the spur to get to hot and thats why it stripped.

If you wanted to upgrade Id go with a Castle Sidewinder V2 and a Castle 3800kv 4pole motor.

The wheels spinning will overheat the motor and esc very quickly. Putting a mamba monster on that car will do nothing but destroy it. Have traxxas replace the motor and esc and stick to hard surfaces

Yeah I love the thought of the extra speed possibilities of the momba monster. You guys are probably right though. For what I use the car for, the velineon is more than fast enough. I hope I was just unlucky and got a defective motor with the car. I ordered a fan for the electronics. Hopefully that will help a little with the heat.

Thanks for the advise guys.

There have been issues with the vxl setups. Traxxas customer support is top notch. It would be interesting to see a mamba monster on that car but it will shred the drive train and in my experience I have had more issues with castles products than traxxas
