I am new to this hobby but am having so much fun. I bought a used T-maxx on ebay and it does not seem to want to shift into second gear. It did shift a couple of times but not until it hit max rpm's and held for a while. I tried to adjust it per the traxxas website and now it won't shift at all. The first screw is tight and the second one is about 5 turns out from closed. I had it so far out at one point that I was scared the screw would fall out. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

It should be 6 1/2 - 7 turns out. It may take a bit of tuning to get it just right but, your on the right track. Don't worry about how loose the screw feels just don't bottom out the screw hard when doing this or you will mess up the spring.

There are 2 allen head screws in there. The one that's in the center you DO NOT adjust. Make sure it's still snug, if you backed it off. The one that's slightly off center is the shift point adjustment. If you back it off too far, you will have to take apart the transmission to get it back.
I suggest that you start to close that screw a little at a time. Have the car warmed up to running temp, and make sure it's not at a high idle. Too fast of an idle will keep it from shifting right.
Rule of thumb with shifting.......think of the screw as looking at the face of a clock, and the clock is at noon, or 12. Turning it to the right, or 1 O'clock, it's an hour later than noon. Turn it left, towards 11 O'clock, and it's earlier. Right for later shifting, left for shifting earlier.
Since it sounds like you backed it out too far, there's the possibility that it shifts almost immediately, so you don't hear it.
There's a very small spot where it will shift correctly, almost like a needle valve. Only adjust the shift point about 1/16 of a turn at a time. It might take a while, but eventually you'll find it's happy spot.

He said he has it at 5 turns out which is not out far enough yet. It won't shift into 2nd at that adjustment. A good starting point is 6 1/2 turns out. Going a little in or a little out from there will get him results.

That's good info. I've only had to adjust mine once in the 3 years I've had it, but I never knew how many turns out from closed it should be. Mine just took a couple of tweeks to the left, and it's been fine ever since.

Just a few weeks ago I was confused to what I was doing with my adjustment as I knew what it was normally (6 1/2-7 turns out) but I had the UE Super 6 in one of my tranny's that need some fine tuning. Because of it's different gearing it's adjustment is 5-5 1/2 turns out! I thought I was going nuts!lol

Thanks for the help. Knowing the settings helped a lot. I now have the transmission set.

Thanks again!!

.

I'm not quite sure which one is off center. let's do it this way... let's say I hold the spur in place and rotate the two speed shaft (which now only rotates one way). Is the adjustment screw the first one or the second one?

Mine is still out in the car, so I can't check for you. I seem to recall that you should be able to tell that it's not quite centered like the other one.
If you are not sure, turn the allen key to the right. If it doesn't move at all, it's the other one.
