I have a 2.5 maxx with a FOC conversion in it, can anyone tell me if it is possible to upgrade to the grey plastic tranny case? I have the original black and I plan to go all the way and get myself the aluminum case in the future. The grey plastic is stronger and my hope is that I can prevent stripping the mounting holes on the bottom of the case! (at least a little bit) The only differences that I can see is that the grey case does not have the opening for the reverse shaft...which I do not have any longer, so it should work right?.:\

I'm not sure if you could do a straight transfer from the black 2.5 case to the gray 2.5r/3.3 case. But the gray tranny will drop right into the 2.5.

I'm not positive either, but seems like it should work if the grey will work with the 2.5r then it should the 2.5 too, cause the only difference in the 2.5 and 2.5r is the cooling head aint it?

I believe that the 2.5r introduced the newer, stronger gray parts. As well as the new knuckles on the ends of the a-arms and the reinforced driveshafts. The only way to be sure if you could transfer it to the gray case would be to look at the schematic of each one side by side. You should be able to find the schematics under "Support" in Traxxas's website.

Get a new forward only trans on ebay, they sell cheap. Then change to some cut down 3.3 shafts and brake, you'll be golden. The black trans has a 5mm output shaft, the grey has a 6mm, unless it comes from a 4902 or 4909 maxx.

I was really only looking at getting the grey case only, I have already got the FOC conversion in my trans, so there is no need to buy a whole new trans. I looked at the exploded views on the traxxas site and can't really determine if the black case from my 4910 maxx is interchangable with the 3.3 grey case, like I said, it appears to me that the only differences are the holes to allow for the reverse linkage. I would like to keep all the same output shafts. Has anyone done this before? It would be nice to go to grey plastic seeing as it is alot cheaper than aluminum, but...it is looking like I have no choice but to go to aluminum if I want to get away from stripping those holes at the bottom of the trans!!

I meant that it can't be done, so you need a new tranny. I bought one for 16 bucks on ebay, a new brake kit is about 2 or 3.

Yeah the grey and the black transmissions are different I tried to switch everything over once and the sizes of output is diefferent and the setup is alittle diferent because of the different sized gears in each.. They are setup similar but completely different

Why bother with aluminum trans case? its stronger than plastic, I am tired of the 8 holes at the bottom of the case stripping when you tighten the plastic case to the chassis, happened a couple of times to me...when you strip the holes at thhe bottom, the transmission can flex and pull the spur away from the cb, resulting in stripped spur gear.
Spur gears are cheap, but how often do you want to replace these!

Never heard of those inserts, but then again I've never stripped a trans case either. The holes in an aluminum case will eventually strip too, depending on the manufacturer.

I have had them in my Maxx tranny for 4 years with many removals and they are still perfect. It is really easy to do and will last. One of the most satisfing mods I have done.
