Spring Diff Mod

The diffs on the HPI RS4-3 are set up like this. What the spring does is adds tension to the gears. It slows the diff action. Essentially, it acts like posi-traction under most conditions. But if extreme loads are transferred to the diff, there is still some slip occurring so you won't obliterate your axels. The other nice thing is that under cornering, if you lift the inside wheel a bit, the diff won't unload as easily, and you won't lose traction or over-rev the engine. I think I may give it a try and see how it works...

That looks interesting... Are you supposed to pack the diff cup like that? I'm going to have to rip mine apart and see whats goin on in there...lol

good deal, thanks for the info....just what i needed. I just did this, and tomorrow i'll take her out and see how she does!

Packing the diff cup helps slow the diff some more. It's like changing the weight of the silicone in 1/8 buggy diffs. It just helps lock up the diff a bit more...

This modification will also help your maxx handle a lot better! Instead of flipping is will be more prone to sliding. I am the one who wrote that article, and have been running my maxx like that for almost 2 years without issue!

hey i have just done that to my diffs and i had not had a chance to run my maxx yet but i am getting there. i will keep up posted.

Well written mod! Good work!

If you want it published here in the 'tech-info' section drop me a line. Ill get it up there for ya'!

Please feel free to post it on your tech section, one thing I'd like to add to this, it is not a good idea to do this mod to the front diff of your maxx, while it won't hurt anything it will increase your turning radius considerably!

dang, now u say that. i just found that out that when i turn it takes a hell of a lot longer too turn around now. i am going to go and take the spring out of the front diff.

Great thread and great idea max -

If you want the ultimate traction you do the rear and front spool but if you drive onroad allot your going to wear your chit out allot faster. I like to hill climb so I did the front and rear diffs on my Maxx with diff lock grease from here http://www.badhorsie.com/products/diff-lock-grease.html. I still haven't had the chance to truly test it offroad yet but in my huge backyard (with allot of dirt_ you can already tell that the wheels aren'ts slipping when they normally would and on road it actually acts differently but seems to handle better for the most part.

If I would have known this (spring thing) when I did my diffs I would have added the spring to the rear too with the grease.

I'll definitely update everyone on real offroad performance with the diff grease..."limited slip diffs"!

Peace

wht does locking up ur diffs with like playdo or jb weld do does it increase traction or wht?

:whhooo:Last post was 8~25~2003!

What it does is lock the diff like a spool, spools are great for those that run at the sand dunes with paddles tires in the soft sand.

On harder surfaces the spools break things & driveshafts very quickly, pack your diff with a heavy grease if you want to increase the diff's bias.
