My friend has burned through a 12t and a traxxas 20t in less than 2 weeks. He went and bought a Trinity 27t at hobbytown yesterday, today while we were running it it started to smell really bad like it was burning up. They have all been oiled regularly and the new trinity has never gotten wet or anything. Is it normal for this to happen when you 1st get a new motor? There is a ring around the magnets inside where I assume the armature has been rubbing. Is this also normal?

I also am having problems with my titan 12t and I've only had it since Friday. It will go about 5 feet then stops and does nothing but I have full steering, just no power. Any ideas for that? I've heard of people having lots of difficulties with the 12t.

Thanks

I've abused the hell out of a few titians, though I've heard of them being burned up easily. Mine have all held up real well, even over geared. Sounds like your buddies mesh is too tight or something else is binding.

Mesh's have been fine. I've been there everytime he has set them up.I'm getting real sick of these motors getting burned up.

personally I got tired of paying for the stock Traxxas motors and just gave up and went brushless. All of the Traxxas motors 12t and titan 775 people have had them burn up way too soon. I have bought at least 3-4 myself before I gave up. They can make a good dependable brushless setup in the Velineon for the everyday basher though.

Its a 23 tooth pinion with the stock 86 tooth spur. When hes by himself he used 7.2v nimh's but i let him use my 8.4's sometimes.

Would the smell coming from the trinity epic monster 27t be because it is breaking in or something along those lines?

You shouldn't be able to smell it unless your nose is right up to it. With the size of the slash tires, that gearing sounds fine. I ran a 25-86 and an 8 cell 4600 through my xl5/12t. Rusty with 2.2 mashers. On pavement, but still geared way too high. That motor would get smokin' hot/ close to 200. I ran it for a few months and now it's in a buddies vintage ultima. Still goin' strong.

I could smell it while I had it run past me When I was driving it. 2.2 inchers

I'd look into an ez run bl system. $50-60. Drop down some teeth on the pinion when going brushless. Going with a smaller pinion is the only thing I can think of to help his problem with the brushed motors, too.

Mine ripped. It was only 3000kv. A slash would probably be cool in the low 4000's. They handle 3s or 9 cell nimh. Comes with a programmer. Search on ebay and check 'em out. Good bang for the buck. I over heated my motor bad(230+) and it still ran for 15-20 more packs. It was real quick on 8 cells.

I'll look into it. He's gonna take his to hobbytown because mesh is fine, but the motor wont even let it coast.

The 23T pinion will chew up The Titan 12T motors in a hurry. Traxxas gives you that pinion, but don't ever run it in a stock slash. I smoked a brand new motor in 6 min of track time running it. When I sent it into Traxxas for replacement, they yelled at me for overgearing it. I yelled back for including the 23T knowing that it would smoke the stock motor. They replaced it for free ;-)

Haha. Is there any other place rather than feebay to buy this ezrun system?

I believe Hobbywing is the distributor. Don't quote me, though. Mine came from Hong Kong in around a week. I just found the cheapest seller with the 3000kv system. I figured I'd stick to a lower kv motor because I run big tires and a lot of cells. Figured my rusty was heavier than most. I could of went higher.

I have had a few different BL setups in my Slash and this is what I found the options are.

1.Castle Creation sidewinder combo - 4600(5700 runs too hot for raceing) $144.99
I have both the Max and Sidewinder love them both, insane topend from the 5700 just both where finicky heat wise and kinda a pain in the Slash. I also burned up a 5700 by not watching my temps right in the middle of the B main my wires caught fire and nobody would touch it because they were afraid of the Lipo. I had to jump down from the drivers stand and put it out myself before it burned the body:D
2.Velineon BL waterproof combo - 3500kv/ 10T $159.99
I own 2 of these and have run them in a slash and rustler w 2s, 3s lipos and 7,8,9 cell nimh. I ended up leaving this one in the Slash I drive all the time just because it fast and durable. I have never once had a heat issue with this even over gearing for speed runs on 3s. For the most part I know if I am going to have a problem it won't be esc related, besides being waterproof I also know that Traxxas has good support.

I haven't tried the EZ run system yet mainly because I would spend $100 on something and probably have no support but I may be wrong. anyway thought I would share...

The water proof velenion is hard to beat. Waterproof sets a new standard for me. I recommended the ez run because of the one I found for $50, shipped. I was really surprised. Huge difference over the xl5(obviously). I burned the motor up, but it was totally my fault. With the traxxas support and a good track record, I would pony up the $150 for the vxl, too. But on a budget, the ez run is hard to beat.

Could water be killing the motors? We oil them after they get wet, but still having problems.

After having yet another motor stop working in my slash, I took it to my LHS. They told me its my esc killing them. That means my esc started burning my 1st 12t up pretty much from the start.

If your running the brushed motors in water they will get water in the end bell then get rust shortly there after so that definately could be what's burning them up.
