screw/thread size

I don't understand this screw/thread size terminology. Like 4-40 or 6-32. Whaat exactly does that mean? I bought some 4-40 Dupro rod ends from my LHS yesterday only to realize that my screws were too big to fit through the ball (just barely too big). Can someone tell me what those numbers mean and what size ends I need?Thanks

should explain the screw terminology thing, i prefer to take the accual part into a hardware store and find one that treads well w/o grinding

and at a hardware store you can get one screw for like 6 cents, compared to getting 4 at a hobbie store for 75 cents but at the hobbie store you will get more 1 on 1 help with a guy that knows what hes talking about...usually

I'm in a machining class and we had to learn all of this stuff. what you listed is not the entire thread classification. it would actually be something like 3/8 - 24 UNF 2A meaning 3/8" major diameter (or outside diameter of a screw) 24 is how many threads per inch (or pitch) UNF is Unified National Fine (meaning it is standard 60 degree and it is the common fine measurement of the 3/8" diameter) and 2A is the class of fit, 2 being 75% thread depth which is common and A being external thread. if you want to figure out the major diameter of a screw thread, such as a 4 - 40 screw, there is a simple formula. Screw size (4 in this case) multiplied by .013" (which would be .052") then add another .060" (which would make a 4 screw diameter .112") i dont know if this helps you any or not but if you need more info, i think i should be able to cover it. just ask and ill tell you all i know. if i dont know it, I'm sure its in my machinist's handbook so ill be able to find it

to easily put it if its say 4/32 4 would be the size of the shank and 32 would be the thread pitch/size per inch.

Lessen, the screws in a T-Maxx are metric. The rod ends you bought are 4-40 standard, you actually needed 3mm metric rod ends.

Do you know of any long 3mm endsand where I can get them? I need long ends for my 4 wheel steering setup. The ends I got from my LHS were perfect (7.5" center of ball across turnbuckle to opposite center) just the wrong screw size. I looked real quick but am not having any luck finding 3mm. I'm seein plenty of 6-32 though.
