I just setup a new computer with XP.
When I click on certain items on web pages I get a runtime error.

One of these happens to be adding Smilies, not on the forum page but in PM only.

It asks me if I want to debug and I click yes but my computer has no program to debug with.

Any clues whats going on or how to isolate and solve the issue?

Edit: Now I can't recreate it! However it is a recurring issue on many different pages on different sights.

Did you do your windows updates?

Do that, then let us know what you come up with.

p.s it sounds like a java runtime error, but make sure you have your windows updates, then we can start debuggin the rest
 
Eddy, I think it's page coding errors. Windows Update can install a page debugging utility but I don't care about it for the most part.

BTW, new Windows installs have abandoned Java scripting.

I think Java runtime remains intact on upgrades from Win2k SP3 or lower but new installs of Win2k SP4 or XP SP1 don't have it.

I'm not retarded, but you confused me...

What do you mean "new windows installs have abandonded java scripting"?

Just making sure his "new install" of windows is updated through microsoft is a good starting point, what exactly are you telling him to do?

1) Did you download andinstall Sun Java? Microsoft no longer supports or offers MS Java VM and new PCC's will more than likely not have any Java VM installed.

2) Did you put zone alarm on it? I've found that ZA will cause all kinds of stupd errors like that (Runtime Error).

ZA should never cause such an error.

just run the freakin updates, go from there.

Its not hard to do people, its a stupid cycle that MS forces you through in order to use their products. Love it or leave it.
 
Keeb - did you notice that MS no longer include Java on their new installs!??! Which means they also no longer have Java in their updates right?

Not knitpicking - just adding in the Java portion.

I did'nt just pull that out of my ass, it's happened to me quite frequently on my PC's with ZA on them. The ones without ZA don't do it.

I've been running ZA for years and years and never had a runtime error due to the use of the firewall.

As for the rest of this thread, the initial post stated that the user was doing a fresh install of windows xp, and was encountering runtime errors. Whats the first thing you do after installing a new MS product? Thats right, you run MS updates.

From THERE we can further diagnose the issue, but some people are getting way to complicated for no reason. This user may not have a CS degree, and may not give a rats ass about java and whether or not its still supported through MS.

I'm saying take everything one step at a time, its easier to diagnose a problem this way.
 
The install was originally done by HP. I ran live update and installed every available update. I have also installed Java.

I'm fairly consistent on keeping things up to date. I have 6 PCs ruining XP and this is the only one I'm having issues with.

Just to make sure we are on the same page will someone please link me to the proper Java download.

I do NOT have ZA installed I have a hardware firewall.

I'd give a rats ass what MS supports/offers or not. It's supposed to be the poop and do anything, but it doesn't and they don't tell folks that. The smilie window is java driven, as well as alot of this site and alot of other sites. Out of the box XP SP1 does not include any java and the browser is taking a dump because it doesn't know wtf to interpret it with. ie. New install ... hmm, java update?

And as for ZA not causing problems, then next time I'm surfing on a my PC with that installed, I'll take a screed capture to show you the error.

You do that, and when you get that ZA error (edit: error caused by ZA) that has nothing to do with ZA, ill show you what is wrong.

And yes, a java update/install from sun would be a novel, dare I say, brilliant idea, but get this, how bout making sure everything else works before installing aftermarket software to solve a problem?

I'm seeking ideas from a cumulative group of knowledgeable people. We can debate the TS flowchart another time.

I have indeed installed Java and the issue still follows me.
 
Whatever. Who do you think owns the rights to java? Sun. Why doesn't MS package java with their OS, or even offer it for download anymore? Because Sun owns Java and MS lost in court. Aftermarket software, that's a good one.

Ed, I hope you get it worked out. Just another reason that I despise MS. Maybe Keeb can give you some info that will help, I'm out.

Dude, i hate MS. I'm a long time advocate of opensource software, i only use the poop cause I have to.

Sun's Java IS aftermarket software, it didnt come bundled with the os...what would you call it? Its like installing Shockwave, Quicktime etc... You dont install it, you dont use the type of media it was intended for.

Back to the issue. Can you give screenie of the error? I noticed you said you can't recreate it; are you still getting the error? What are the exact steps leading up to the error?

If you use a different web browser, do you still get the error? Try Firefox, or Nutscrape. The ONLY time I use IE is when I have to do a windowsupdate because MS bans other browsers from running against their update server.

Let me know.

P.s. Dont get pissed at me Error, I'm just trying to sort this poop out just like you.
 
I'm not pissed at you, and the help you give I'm sure is welcome. This past week I started a new job and all I did for about 9-10 hours a day is remove viruses and spyware from windows machines. The place I work at also is an Apple certified service center. Out of all the machines that came into the shop this week that had software issues, none (0, zip, nada) were Apples. I'm an MCP in 2K pro, and I despise MS. If they would just fix their crap and make it all they say it is, I'd be happy. But when someone (or a large software company) pisses on my back and tells me it's raining, I kind of get a case of the ass. That wasn't directed at you. The fact that MS took Java and branded it as microsoft Java VM and didn't credit the owner (or provide royalties to them) and lost in court really peeves me. Then they say, oh well you figure it out, we don't support that. They tried to steal it, got caught and now they're like "that poop aint ours", and God forbid your system is OEM, then MS won't even talk to you on the phone when trying to troubleshoot the OS itself. The litany goes on and on.

As for ZA causing my errors, it doesn't say it in the error window, but if I disable all the cookie, mobile code, ad blocking, popups, yadda yadda in the ZA setup, everything works fine. I quit trying to find out exactly which combination of settings would work when I started running OS X. And yes I do run multiple browsers in OS X (Safari, IE, NS, and Opera), mostly for html code checking. The simple fact about windows is that it is inherently goofy, and time will only bring this trait out more and more. I won't even go into the problems my XP laptop has, someone will surely call BS on me then.
 
I believe I found the reason.
I went into my browser settings and noticed they were set to Custom. I changed it to the Medium default setting and all seems to be well now.

I can see Java script errors on the bottom of the browser in text but all works well and I'm not getting the pesky debug window.

Thanks for the help. Believe it or not this thread prompted me to think differently about the issue and aided me in its resolve.
