I have a custom built crawler (professionally built about 5 years ago) that I’d like to re-work to make it less complex, clunky and more reliable. It currently has the following componants:
- Flysky FS16x transmitter
- FS-iA6/10B Receiver (controls 2-axis servos on front camera, 4 wheel steering (2 servos) and forward/reverse/speed of motor)
- RunCam 2, 4k Camera on 2-axis servos
- Team Blacksheep, Unify Pro 5G8 HV Race VTX (currently needs a custom fitted 30x30 cooling fan)
- Black Pearl Diversity Monitor RC801
- Fly RC Battery Voltage Tester
- Hobbywing Electronic Power Switch for XR8 for Receiver (not sure why this is needed)
- Holmes Hobbies TrailMaster Sport 540 Electric Brushed Motor
- Hobbywing QuicRun Waterproof 1080 G2 ESC for Motor with 3 large capacitors
- Protek RC Graphene Plus 1400 mah, 3 cell battery.
- Custom front lights. Not sure how they are wired in.
The chassis, motor and trany have been fine, but I’d like to simplify the hardware. I recognize that there will likely be quite a bit or retiring involved.
My goal are:
- To have one handheld device that controls the veh and receives the video transmission and displays it on the hand-held controller or on my phone. The current set up requires separate power/charging and can’t easily be held together. It’s also important that the video and images captured can be directly saved to my phone.
- To have have one power-on switch for the vehicle power. Currently there are 4. I have to connect the batter wires, connect the battery voltage tester, turn on the transmitter and turn on the camera. I’d like the receiver to handle the camera power, the front light bar, and camera lights, voltage meter, and motor controls.
Space is a premium on the crawler. But I’m willing to invest quite a bit if it can be re-built with quality hardware. What do you recommend?
- I assume I need a receiver for the veh controls and a separate vtx for the camera. Is there a hand-held device that can transmit for the controls and receive the vtx signal and send it wired or wireless to my phone?
- What camera would you recommend? Using the RunCam 2 (that has Wi-Fi signal and can be captured directly to my phone, but with limited range) with the Black Sheep VTX seems like it can be simplified. (I have another crawler inspection vehicle that uses a hand-held like the FIMI TX10 and a camera/light like this .
- I’ve wondered if something like the Skydroid S1 might be an option, but don’t know if that will cover all my bases, specifically direct capture to my iPhone.
Please suggest and comment. All help is appreciated.
