Way to go guys at the Nats.. I'm sure you guys learned a lot about the car and testing new things in order to improve the handling.. You guys will put the Swift on the podium in the future I'm sure.. Thing is the track conditions there look very dry and dusty.. I can imagine the car was pretty loose..

Anyway, I'll be rocking over here in the Roar Region 5 doing some of my own testing and getting a good combination to see what works best.. I'll keep ya all posted with what I find out and my set ups for different track conditions.. The warm-up race for the Michigan Gas Racers Series is this weekend and the first points race is next weekend.. I have some things I'm going to try and I'll let you all know how it all goes..

Jose - Are you running for Fantom?? I noticed the new motor..

Roger - Thanks for all your help with parts in the weak areas.. Give it time though, the bugs will get all worked out..

Gixer Jay: Yes I do, that was another thing I was testing at the nats. Good luck in your region.

Thanks Jose.. Yeah, the Fantom guys are all really cool up here in Michigan.. We always have a good time when we're together.. I'll have to tell them to be nice to that Jose guy cause he runs the same car I do.. LOL

I'll be in touch Jose.. Oh, and by the way whats the next big race on your schedule?? 1/8 SCALE IFMAR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in August?? Road trip to Sweden??

Gixer Jay: Unfortunately no Worlds this year, my wife is due August 3rd, first kid. We are actually looking at the schedule to see what race we may do, probably the Kyosho race, but not sure. BTW, say hi to Troy and Jeff for me.

Saturday 15 May 2004.

First run after break-in. Damage report:-

Well, the sun came out here in the UK for the first time since we broke in the engine. Time to hit the dirt, well, sports field actually.

Surface is bumpy short grass. Ground is still slightly soft from this weeks rain. Plenty of run-off area so my six year old son can play without fear of collision damage. ("Watch my legs boy, keep the car over there!")

Impressed with the way the Swift hugs the ground (no real jumps here, sadly).

Pushing wide when powering through turns. Servo has 133oz/in but and there does appear to be a reasonable amount of steering lock. Put it down to too much speed and the short block patterned stock tyres not working well on grass. Short grass or astroturf is a feature of most UK tracks. Medial-Pro Turbo Rats are the tyre of choice here (big spikes).

Brake hard and turn hard and the back end breaks loose and we're looking at where we just came from. More practice required.

No rolls or flips. Either we're not trying hard enough or this car is good. Brakes do not fail to impress.

This tank of fuel is about done, bring her in...

Head temp is over 140C but there is plenty of smoke out of the stinger. The exhaust header is visible where a piece of body shell used to be. Remove the partially melted bodyshell and it's obvious that the exhaust coupler has slipped off the tuned pipe and the tuned pipe is half blocking the open coupler. Exhaust header is not seated properly in the rear-port on the engine. Hope that this high temperature is due to excess back pressure in the engine and no major damage has occured internally.

Left hand side mud guard has also been reshaped by the hot exhaust. No cable ties in the toolbox that are big enough for the exhaust coupler. Reattach the pipe and tighten the old cable ties as best we can. Trim all the melted bits off with a knife. Engine is cool now and she fires up on the second pull.

Off we go again...

"Wait Dad, one of those shiny things is missing from the front!". We appear to have lost a driveshaft (front, right). Shoulda listened to the advice in the Swift Buggy Owners forum. But the diff outdrives had no excess play and all the CVD pins were held in with one grubscrew. "This car is from the latest batch and there will be no problems" I told myself earlier, "I don't need to shim the diffs or loctite any screws".

After searching what seemed like acres of grassland for 15 minutes we found the "shiny thing". Still straight, still very shiny. No sign of the drive pin holder though...

To be honest I was more concerned with losing e-clips off the suspension arm pivot pins. A couple fell of last night while I was setting up the brake bias on the kitchen table. Nipped them up with the pliers and put them back on where they came from. Bought a bag of 30 e-clips this morning just in case.

Hopefully the replacement drive pin holder will be cheap and easy to obtain. Needless to say, all the other CVDs will be coming out for a rebuild with blue loctite.

Cleaned her up with the air-duster at home and checked the other screws, all OK. Still impressed with the Swift. It's gonna be a lot of fun.

if i was to buy the swift, what i have to locktite (or do whatever else) before i run? thanks

Well, you have to remove one of the two set screws for every CVJ and blue loctite the one set screw that is gonna hold the CVJ pin..

You gotta shim the diffs ( read earlier pages in this thread )..

And if your gonna race your gonna want to redo your shocks.. Kyosho 1.3mm pistons all the way around with 40wt oil in the frt and 30wt in the rear.. Kyosho lite blue springs.. Thats a good starting point for most tracks.. ( I used that set up this weekend at a race, but had to switch to 37 1/2 in the rear for the BIG AIR jumps I was driving on..

Good luck

Don't forget to lock tite the screws holding the motor mount to the chasis. I noticed that most of the metal to metal screws did have some sort of lock tite from the factory that seemed real brittle and tough, but it doesn't hold like 242 lock tite does for some reason. I noticed when I checked the gear mesh for my motor to the center diff... there was NO lock tite on the motor mount at all, so I am glad I did that one, you will ruin the teeth in a hurry if you don't get that one too.

Bassicaly make sure you shim the diffs (it seems intimidating, but it really is a piece of cake), pull both set screws out on every CVJ and only put ONE set screw back in with lock tite... make sure you don't over-do the locktite and get it all over the CVJ. Also, loosen all of the motor mount screws, get the gear mesh as tight as possible with it being able to freely move (as little play as possible with the teeth), tighten the screws back in, make sure the mesh is just right, then pull one by one and lock tite each of them one at a time. Other than that, you're all set. You will need about a half hour if you know what you are doing, if you don't know the car well yet, it will take you maybe 1-2 hours total... it's really not that much work.

BTW, I installed the GS Storm front bumper after massaging it with the dremmel... thanx for the tip, it ended up fitting perfect and looks awesome.

Quick dumb Q... what are you all using for the fuel fill pull? It looks liek a modified zip tie or something... what do you guys use for that?

WA2FAST: It is a zip tie loop with fuel tubing. Cameron has my car, and I think he will be taking some more pics. This should be clearer.

JZ

yeah... that's exactly what it looked like, but I just couldn't figure how the zip tie attached to the loop on the fuel door if the loop was sitting upright... that's what I can't tell about. Have a better pic of it by chance anyone? Having a brain fart on that one. :stick:

Thanx Jose... [email protected]

Send me a few different shots of it if you could... I have a couple from when Roger sent me some for the setup, but I wouldn't mind seeing a few more shots up close or whatever you have. Thanx bud, I really appreciate it.

Nice, we love when we are the first to see/hear! Thanks for the inside info!

So it's a new fule tank with line holders and splash guard?

He wagnerov how's about letting me be on of the first to buy a Concept X and I will race it and do a build/race review of it. PM me if that's sounds like something we can work out and ignore me if I am high on bongwater thinking I could get in on something like that LMAO!
