After break-in and tuning on its 6th tank I was running it around the field and it was running really well shifting into 2nd etc. then all of a sudden it revved and the wheels didnt go anywhere on closer inspection the big black gear between the engine and the gear box, has stripped itself, I'm really hacked off now, cos i know I'm going to have to take it all apart to change the gear, does anyone have any option for preventing this or should I just take it all back

stripping spur gears is normal
just get another one!! there like 4 bux.. just make sure you mesh it correctly

the spur gear is desinged as a weak point so that it will strip or give instead of your more expencive diffs or drive shafts or even the trans.. you can get a metal one for about 25 bux.. (you will need to change the clutch bell to) and you prolly wont strip that one but you will end up breaking other things..

since it is so new make sure the drive train spins freely when they truck is off.. you could have a rock or something lodged in the suspension, put up a pic of the spur so the veterain r/c guys can tell you if your mesh was off or if the clutch bell melted it.. then we can teach you how to make sure it doesn't happen again..

that gear will strip alot if it isn't meshed well (lined up) you can get a metal one but than you will have to upgrade your drive train i would just buy 2 or 3 of the plasic ones.
and you will have to take your truck apart a lot.
what part of the uk are you from?

I'm from guildford in surrey, I'm sure that a RTR version should be meshed correctly, shall I just take it back

Sure, take it back. They might give you a free replacement since it's new. It would also be a good idea to have the guy show you how to properly adjust for the correct mesh. Just make sure you pick up a couple of spares while you're there.

maby take the spur back but i wouldnt take the whole truck back.. then you gotta break it all in again!!! just buy a few (i keep at least 2) and make sure you mesh it good..

how easy is it to replace as i hope I dont have to take the whole damn thing apart

it's easy you just have to take the engine out and then take the nut off the gear and it sould come off. if you have problems take it to the place you got it and ask them to show you how to do it.

Half the fun of this hobby is taking things apart, fixing them, upgrading them, putting it all back together, and then watching your handiwork rip up the road. If you do not enjoy doing this then you will hate this hobby.

ditto.. i think we wrench more than drive sometimes!! but when you see it ripping up the grass or dirt and flying through the air some 40+ feet and comming back for more you wont mind the hours you spent workin gon it at all..

Mine just stripped a couple days ago. It sux because it is always something in this hobby.

i have to agree with rossb. 90% of the this hobbyis wrenching on the trucks. making them faster, stronger meaner...if that is not in persona, then might as well sell it off.

if u like that sort of hobby, just go back and buy a few spares. u can get differnt tooth counts that will alter how fast or slow your truck goes...

yeah i know its just a pain that it stripped after 2 days, i want to fit the steel disc brake mod so I might aswell do it all at the same time, but will mean few days of taking it apart

Installing the disc mod and a new spur should take about 40 minutes.

is installing the new spur and disc mod easy enough to cope with

All you have to do for the spur gear is tank the fuel tank off. Two body pins. For the brake disc mod, take off the rear end, install new brake disc, reinstall rear end. Done. 1 hour, 2 hours at most.

really I thought I had to take the engine and gearbox out and stuff for the spur change

U do have to take out the engine AND the tank. If u can take off the spur gear without taking off the engine, good luck.

Engine has to come out - 4 allen head screws from the bottom. You need to set the mesh properly when putting it back together. I set it by feel and by eye. When the mesh is right the spur and clutch bell will spin very smoothly. When the mesh is too tight the gears will bind as you spin them. If the mesh is too loose the gears will not spin each other, or they will be noisy or 'clicky' I shine a light under the truck and look through the side of the TVP at the mesh. The gears should be about 80% "into" each other. Check the owners manual for a picture of what a proper mesh looks like.

Some people use the paper trick to set the mesh. You can see that here

The rear bulkhead does have to come off to install the new brake setup. I remove the 4 screws holding the rear bulkhead on and the 4 screws holding the motor mount plate to the TVP. You can then slide the rear bulkhead off. These are not difficult or time consuming tasks.

Put all screws back where they came from and use blue loctite on all metal to metal screws.
