I have been having a probledm with melting my clutch on my 21 t-maxx. It just started here recently and I have gone through 4 clutches and only 10 tanks of fuel! Any suggestions? I had thought it was because I was running a 21 with a modified 3 speed conversion but I just went back to a standard clutch bell and a spur gear but it still melted the clutch in less than one tank of fuel. Any suggestions? Any abstract reasoning or fixes?

Put the spur gear back on!

Are you running leading edge or trailing edge engagement? What kind of clutch?

-Chris

Things to consider and do.

1. Deglaze the inside of the clutch bell.
2. Check, double check and triple check the bearrings (this is the cause most of the time)
3. Make sure you did not put the bell on too tight. If so, shim it out.
4. Switch to 'leading edge' engagement. When you continually melt shoes under a proper setup, chances are the RPM's are getting too high before it engages. Leading edge engagement will cause the clutch to engage quicker.
5. Upgrade to either a MIP or Aluminum clutch if you can find one.

Hope this helps.

Again, check those bearrings.

is the clutch bell to small???? does it spin freely? or does it have a little resistance??? that could heat it up alot...

I am currently using the MIP clutch shoes. I'd love for the alum clutch shoes but my lhs does not stock them. Where can I buy the alum ones online?

I just tried a test run with the MIP shoes in there and the clutch seemed really hot considering I had only ran my t-maxx for about 2 minutes before I checked the temp, finger temp test. Should I try lightening the slring in the shoe?

Also there seems to be some sort of binding in the tranny when I roll my t-maxx. Teh binding only happens when I have both the front and rear drive shafts connected. Could this be the cause? What might be causing this binding when it rolls?

Could be a differential causing you all of this grief. If when you disconnect the center drive does the clutch still heat up????

-Chris

I went and rebuilt the diff and 99% of the resistance is gone. as it seems the washer in the diff was too big making the gears bind as a result. now everything is smooth as butter. I'll see about the clutches burning up in 45 minutes when Sky and I start offering flying lessons to my roommate.

The cold weather was making the shoes about as hard as aluminum and slick as snot. No grab what so ever...lots of heat and no movement. After switching to leading edge and roughing up the shoes a bit, he got his T to run much better. Too bad we couldn't have had more time; we could have really showed his roomie what Maxxin' is all about.
