Sounds like your reverse linkage needs adjustment.
+1 on that. I'm guessing you have forward/reverse, unless it's used and someone put a forward only kit in it.
For as often as I'd like to have a reverse... it just isn't worth the hassle of having it. I've removed it on any rigs I've bought that had it. Less parts = less issues.
