I got excited at the LHS recently and ended up purchasing an SH .21 buggy engine. It's still in the box and I got the receipt and I wonder if I should keep the thing. Shoot opinions over so I can make up my mind. Thanks!

I have heard it that the sh.21 is pretty good. I was actually told to get that engine for my race savage.

This is the stock engine that comes with the PRP Swift RTR models.

It's a 3 port engine (4 if you count the exhaust port). The carb venturi is quite narrow and the port timing is conservative. The engine's main strengths are therefore low- and mid-range torque. A top-end screamer it ain't. Some people reckon that it runs a bit on the hot side. I think this is a consequence of the narrow carb venturi (can't get enough fuel through at high engine speeds) and the heat sink that is noticeably smaller than other .21 engines. Virtually any 4-screw heatsink will fit (I use a Savage 21 heatsink).

Having said that, daveg in the Swift forum reckons that it can be livened up a bit with some porting work but will still pull OK on a 15T clutch bell in a buggy. I have a couple of these engines for my Swifts and will be doing some experimental porting work on one that is starting to wear out a little now.

AFAIK, the XTM 24.7, Dynamite and Mach engines are all made by SH in Taiwan.

Depending on what he paid I will disagree with you. SH makes race versions of their .21 and I highly doubt they will put them in rtr buggies. Just check the sgrid and the sharwins. They are all out race engines at a fraction of the cost.

I picked it up from Hobby People. It's a pro version; cost $220 or so. God, I hope I wasn't raped and that this isn't the RTR engine in the swift. If it is, it's going back to the store when I get in to Vegas.

I want to keep in the box and run my other engines around first. I have a hyper pbs and mayhem so one of these buggies will get the SH if I keep it and I'll race that buggy.

Keep the opinions coming. Thanks!

Yea those engines have gotten some good reviews by the semi/pro racers on the sgrid. 220 sounds about right for that engine too.

My mistake. It's been a while since I checked up on the SH engine range and I see that they now have 6-port engines in their .21 range.
