i just bought some new Traxxas Big Bore X-Long shocks for my TMaxx 4908. Are there any tricks to fill them or get them set up right?

If I were you i would take it to my lhs and have them do it if you don't do it right they will leak or they will have air bubbles in it. Trust me I've tried it before.

I've built tons of shocks and never had a problem. You could take them to the LHS, but then you'll never learn how to do it the right way. Here's what I do. Fill them up most of the way with your shock oil, and then move the piston up and down until you work all of the air bubbles out. Once you get the air bubbles out, screw the shock cap on a few times but leave it loose. Then work the shock a few times so the extra oil spills out of the cap. Once you've done this a few time go ahead and tighten the cap down all the way. Then work the shock in and out a few more times. If you push the shock shaft into the shock body and it pushes itself back out, you have just a tad too much oil, so open them up and pour a drop or two out and try again. Once you've done one or two, you will learn how much is just enough and you'll get it right the first time. When I'm filling them up, I hold them with a rag. That way when I work the shock to push out the extra fluid, the rag catches the oil and then I wipe the shock down when I'm done.

One more tip, before you put the O-Rings on the shock shaft, put a drop of oil on each one. That way when you work the shocks before the oil gets to them, you wont stretch or tear them buy opertating the shocks with no oil on the seals.
