well after a further 3 litres of fuel after my savage 25 went back to mirage for its carb and one way to be replaced, this happens.

if you can't see (poor quality pic), the pin on the crankshaft, that connects the con rod to the crank has snapped in half.

the engine hasnt been run lean as the inside looks brand new, theres no rust in there either, so it hasnt been mistreated.

I'm sick of this, its the second time my engine has got to go back to mirage, very unhappy customer!:

From my past experience when things like this happen it is one of two things.

1. Then engine has had a lot of fuel through it 8-9 gallons.

or

2. Way over rev, or it was wot for a long period of time.

There is always a plausible explanation for the demise of an engine.

The S-25 is a reliable motor, I suspect user error.

i treat my engines well, never over rev for long preiods, infact hardly ever hit max revs, run then a bit rich about 200 to 220f.

the engine has had about a gallon of fuel throught and I've only had it for about 5 weeks.

explain that.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't mean that every single one is going to be reliable, and unfortunatly mine is that one in 10

I ran mine hard, for about two years, at 260 degrees, and the only reason I removed it was because the pull starter broke, but the engine still runs strong. Other than that I thought it was a very reliable engine.

Are you talking about the little pin that sits in the crank arm and actually connects with the starter rod? Those will break and you end up loosing the little spring. Not sure if that is what you are referring to.

Sorry about your troubles, man.

I have no idea what is going on with yours, maybe you have airleaks that are leaning it out. What kind of plugs & fuel are you using? I ran over three gallons on mine before I put in a bigger and more aggressive motor. It still ran great when I took it out of service. I keep it in my field box as a backup when I go to the track just in case I blow my current motor.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I think your case is a rare one. The S-25 is known for it's reliability and trouble free maintenance. It does like to run a little hotter than other engines (at least mine did), at 280 mine ran like a raped ape. It ultimately met it's demise when I discovered the fun of backflipping and landing on your engine head.

I am a little curious about your temps though, they seem a bit low. At 200-220 my S-25 was a complete slug. What ambient temps do you normally run at?

well i still hadnt been able to fully lean the motor out as the temps are still quite low here in the uk.

i was planning to switch to a cooler plug for the up and coming warmer weather but never got the chance.

Monkey, its not the little pin, its the actual crankshaft pin (?) that hold the con rod on, its snapped in half.

when i openend the motor up there were loads of copper fileings in there, it looks like its first cracked the crank, then proceeded to shred the shim out of the conrod.

now i think its related to my last problem that mirage delt with which was to replace the carb and the owb.
the owb had jammed on the shaft so i wonder if it had damaged or put stress on the conrod/starting pin or that area and has weakend it.

as i said its been about 3 weeks since i got it back and its allready broken again.

its been run on 25% tornado which they reccomend, so they can't say it was iffy fuel.

and to the airleaks, no airleaks at all, else it would of been hot and it wasn't.

I am going to assume Mirage is a LHS in your area or is that the distributor? I would try contacting HPI customer sevice directly and dealing with them. I have heard their CS is really good and should offer you a replacement or repair since the engine is still fairly new.

That sucks for you, but I'm sure Mirage will make it right. Especially if this is the second time it's messed up on you.

Let us know what happens

It sounds like your block may have been machined incorrectly as the crankshaft and rod alignment are critical in any engine that turns the rpm's that these do.
I'd ask them to replace the engine instead of repairing it.
Just my opinion, but your case does seem very rare compared to all that I've read and seen.

very true i just put mine back together after it being apart for well over a year and it started in about 10 seconds

I'm not knocking the mill, starts up great and very reliable, its just mine was a bit of a dud one.

i reckon its done this because i put it up for sale, its been on ebay for 2days, went to check everthing and run the fuel out of it and thats when it locked up. trust me to get one with emotions lol:)

well I'm looking at a HB lightning GT at the moment.

looks much easier to work on than the sav and is a bit quicker, and will handle ALOT better :)

ok just an update of what has happend so far....

HPI have said that the engine is 'beyond economical repair' so they are sending me a brand new engine.

I've sold the savage now and found a good lightning GT for very cheap so its looking good.:)

I still have my star.25 it was in my savy for about 3 or 4 gallons. then in my friends maxx for another 2 or 3. still has good compression and runs good. but the shaft the 1 way rides on is so worn, that even with a new bearing it will only start a few times befor it slips again, and the front seal leaks a little. It reminds me of a toyota it just keeps going.
