I have a PBS RTR coming with a Hyper 8 port .21 engine.

Anyone have some information or guidence for me to break this motor in properly? I've heard it has some problems with the carb, and some people have opted to switch it out with an OS carb.

Is this the standard? Does anyone have a good running Hyper .21 with the stock carb and decent break in instructions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Nothing wrong with that engine or the carb.

That engine has a 3 needle setting carb. One setting for idle, one for midrange, and one for WOT. Some people have trouble tuning them. However, they run good when they are "right"

Break it in just as you do any other Nitro engine. I would use a hot plug like an MC-59 in it. Ofna recommends a colder plug, but I have never had any luck with cold plugs in those engines, or any other Ofna Force engine.

If you have a starter box, look into getting a bump start back plate for it. They make more power, and tune easier without the silly turbine in the crank case.

I would have to agree with Bill since I had an 8port in my Savage that I just sold and never had a problem with the engine other then the pull starts. Since you have the starter box that won't be a problem for you.

Take your time tuning the engine and you'll be glad you did - that engine has some major compression! One hint I would give you is to warm up the engine just a little before trying to start it the first couple of times, makes starting the engine MUCH easier.

hey bill so in your expereince with the 8 port it has always ran better with hotter plugs? I'm asking becuase a buggy i got used awhile back came with an 8-port, and while it runs good i have no idea what kind of plug it has in it right now to go on when i need a plug change. so you think the mc-59 is good for the 8 port? anyone else have sugestions?

keebler...i happend to have an OS 20e carb laying around..and i took the lazy road and didnt even want to find out if the hypers carb was finicky to tune...so i swapped out the carb never even running it. i can say it runs great with the OS carb, very fast motor when you consider its only 130$!

I'd consider this engine a fast engine even for $200 or more. This engine was in my savage, the savage isn't the lightest R/C around add that with four jumbomaxx tires doesn't help either. None the less that Savage ripped when I wasn't breaking the pull start.

I've got the Ofna PCR RTR on the way now and I can't wait to see that 8port in a much lighter buggy.

alkyula - I do ran hot plugs in my 8port and as you can see was very happy with it's performance.

I'm building a K3 now, and I'm putting my Hyper 8 in it. I had that mill in a savage also, it rocks in anything you put it in.

It is a great engine. I had problems with the pull start too until I realized the string is too long. The spring will bottom out before the string does, breaking the spring. I just shorten the string 2 inches and take a turn of preload off the spring.

Awesome information guys, thanks a lot.

I appreciate knowledge this place gives, its nice ot be able to get a straight forward answer without trying to be sold a part :)

Ill keep my .21 in that case and tune it. I'm a pretty patient individual, so I should be able to get it running just fine.

Thanks again for all the help and replies

Anytime. And welcome to RCNT. There are a few threads on different tuning techniques, though you might need to do a search to find them (they're spread out through a couple of sections). If you are having any specific tuning issue maybe we can help.
