Hello, my 7 year old son would like an RC car for his birthday. Not really wanting it get into crazy money here, but would like something beyond a New Bright car at Walmart. Spend something around $75-$100.

I’ve found these 2 on Amazon, does one seem better than the other?

Any advice you could give would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome in Badmoon. One important thing to keep in mind is, all RC cars break eventually and with a 7 year old kid maybe not as much but the important thing is to buy a rig that has available parts. I personally would go with a RTR "ready to run" rig. You are going to have to spend a little more but trust me when I say its well worth it. A decent RTR rig like Traxxas or Arrma are reasonable price wise and will last a lot longer. Redcat is another one that has some decent RTR rigs. Granted I don't believe they are as high as quality as the Traxxas or Arrma but I own 3 Redcat's and have no complaints.
You can get a fun little truck called Redcat Volcano EPX for $149 and it comes with every thing but batteries for the transmitter. Usually 4 double AAs.
I would look around the online hobby stores like RCPlanet, Hobbytown, and several others like that..
The models that you posted, I'll almost guarantee won't have available parts.

Thanks so much for the feedback, I had not considered the ability to repair vs not repair. This is designed to be a birthday gift from a grandparent, so keeping it under $100 is needed, though I understand the argument that anything within that price point is just asking to be broken and unfixable

Maybe you can find a good roller and the two of you can make a project out of repairing it and upgrading and learning more about the mechanics of the hobby. It's a great learning experience for young minds

You are welcome. The first thing I ever learned was to made sure there was available parts, unfortunately I learned it the hard way.
I'm afraid $100 isn't going to go very far but I understand the budget thing. This really isn't a hobby we can cut corners with, it comes back to bite us. I still get bit once in a while... :(

Kraton EXB? ???????

Well what I had when I was 7 was a Losi micro t my one grandfather who was way into the rc hobby bought me. it was pretty fun I remember eventually getting a Baja bug body or something for it. But the armma grannit voltage is a steal I’d totally go with that for a first time rc.

Check out the Kyosho Monster Tracker. They cost about $130, but it will last a lot longer and he can modify it as he gets better. You can also get replacement parts for it. You can get better tires, wheels, longer running batteries, upgrade to brushless, etc...

Go to Kyoshoamerica.com to get more details on it.

Hi, I will add links to everything I mention at the bottom,
If u are buying for a young kid who is just getting into the hobby then he will probably break it quite often so something with part availability is key. So if u want the biggest thing for the price I recommend an arrma granite voltage, a 1/10 scale 2wd monster truck with easy upgrades including many motor upgrades to go faster! Also arrma parts are available at any hobby shop or online. However this does not include a Battery or charger, you can buy a 2s lipo and charger for about 20-25 together. It does come with a radio tho, but it has a large delay so I recommend a dumbo rc. If you want the fastest thing I recommend the Wltoys a959b or a979b, these can both get up to speeds of about 38-40 mph, and include a radio (good one) battery and charger. It is 1/18 scale so a bit small, but they cost under $90 and speed and durability upgrades are available, all parts are available from places like Banggood and eBay. If you want something from Traxxas I would recommend the latrax prerunner, it comes rtr with radio battery and charger is 1/18 scale and reaches speeds of about 18mph, all parts are available from local hobby shops and online. Upgrades are also easily available. If you are willing to spend about $150 the Traxxas bandit is available with 1/10 scale. A classic buggy look and rwd, because its a Traxxas parts and upgrades are easy to find. Speeds of up to 30mph are achievable with upgrades gearing ($6).

lmk if you need anymore help

I would choose the Traxxas Bandit. Parts are readily available. You can set the speed control on practice mode. Don't invest in expensive batteries they are totally unnecessary. Run it where there are no hard objects, such as walls, curbs, trees, parked cars, mailbox posts, etc. It's an outside vehicle not inside. Whatever you buy it has to be extremely durable. The younger kids I worked with have difficulty with the concept of slowing down. I would advise practicing wear you can set some cones and markers and have the him/her practice.

What's wrong with WL toys? The parts availability is unbelievable!!! And you can find some really nice 1/12 scale for under $100

I have heard a lot of good things about WLToys cars. I heard that parts are easily available. I have no personal experience with their cars. I know the Bandit is a good car and I can go to my local hobby shop and get parts. Parts are easily available on line and many from Amazon. There are tracks around the country that run Bandit spec classes.

Good morning md6 I hope you're warmer than I am. I've been real happy with my WL toys they are pro entry level at toy prices. All the 12th scale cars that I have, buggies and truggies that is go at least 50 km an hour which equates to about 31 point something miles per hour. Plenty fast. They have a tendency to tump over and roll so I've been putting hub extenders and wider tires on them. I'm waiting on the WL toys 124018 it does 60 km out of the box and right now comes with a free extra lipo I picked it up for $111 and then they gave me a $10 discount. Super super deal give him a try I think you'll fall in love the price is certainly right!!!

Just need to add a little front end weight. Besides that these things are pretty darn good. Not race track good but yard/inside house/ out in the woods good.

Sounds right up my alley I love crawling on rocks and obstacles that sounds like that would be the ticket. I like to put an fpv camera on them and get the feel of looking out the windshield. Tons of fun. Thanks for the lead I'll certainly check into it. Knowing me, it'll be sitting on my shelf in a month or two
