Hi Everyone,

I need help with deciding on the right motor/esc and pinion, my goal is to achieve max speed while keeping correct temperatures and not stripping the gears
This is for 1/8 buggy (Mugen MBX8 ECO) with 46t Spur stock (there is a 44 Spur also available not stock)

1. Motor/ESC

I am deciding between

and

and

https://www.hobbywingdirect.com/collections/combo-special/products/xr8-esc-combo?variant=11826544452

Is the price differential really worth it or is the Max8 just enough with the 2600kv or is the backorder one better

2. Running two 2s (7.4v) or two 3s (if I can push this ESC)? Will 18t Pinion be ok or can I go higher? I tried running the formula (Motor Kv * Battery Voltage) / (Spur Gear / Pinion Gear) = RPM to Transmission but I can't figure out what is the stock transmission

PLEASE HELP

the 1st esc/combo is your choice for some speed..
gears in axels.
New straight cut 13T bevel gear and 44T conical gear.18t is ok to start but id check temps after 30 seconds then a minute..if temp goes up drop tooth count by 2

You would likely want to go with lower kv than 2700 if your going to run 6S. 2200 or less usually.

Are you intending on racing or just bashing? If your just bashing, you could likely find a part out from something like an arrma talion/outcast/senton/typhon.

The typhon is a 1/8th buggy, it has 12t pinion 50t center 13t diff pinion 43t ring gear. It uses a 2050kv motor and is intended for 6S use out of the box I believe.

Thanks, this for parking lot runs and bashing, want to be able to have something reliable not too much fuss, I ordered a 18t pinion with the kit (which I ordered from HK so got a good deal), will that EZR MAx 8 work fine? Like TNT suggests, do these Hobbywings come with a pinion in the box doesn't say in the specifications

Thanks do you know if the combo kit comes with pinions? what is the max temp I should be getting and can't I just set the esc to shut off after a certain temp? The car comes stock with 46t do I need to buy the 44t for now or just try it?

not many combos come with a pinion due to the vast variety of pitches companies use you can order a 3 set of pinions... 16,17 ,18 so on

I don't think they come with pinions. The max8 should be a decent ESC for you. The arrma one I mentioned (blx185) is similar to the max8 in spec, but I believe the max8 has a better BEC and is more adjustable. I'd suggest getting the program box as well. It's cheap and lets you adjust things more easily then pressing buttons and counting beeps.

I use that with my 2 max6's, max10 sct and blx185.

I think the max10 sct/3660 combo I bought did come with a pinion, but it wasn't useful to me, so I'd maybe buy a pack that will fit your needs. When I don't know what I want, I usually just buy a cheap set off amazon for $15. Like these:

I'm not sure which you need though. That link has 2 ranges, 13-16 and 16-19. Once I figure out what I want to end up with, I'll get a good tekno or RRP hardened pinion to replace it when the time comes.

THANKS, I already have the LED Hobbywing programmer, and when I ordered the kit I got a 18t Pinion, like your suggestion. Can I run two 3s on the max8 and 18th or will it overheat, I know to do the trial and error? Otherwise will start with the 13t. I'm sure 2sx2 should be ok but want to eventually move up to 3sx2

HELP-I by mistake purchased the Hobbywing MAX8 Combo of EZRUN 4268 (2600KV). I just called hobbywing and the guy Charlie was a real jerk on the phone very rude saying people call him all the time with applications and he doesn't know if it will work.

As a reminder, want to use this on a Mugen ECO buggy (1/8), to start I was going to run 4s on a 13t and eventually go up to 6s on same pinion but this guy kept on saying its not better and 2600kv is not a good idea. Last week when I called he said it was fine so long as I start with a 13t and keep checking the temps. Now he is saying it not.

I am not racing but dont want to have problems down the line with overheating- should I return this and get the 2200kv combo or can I make this work? I specifically asked him if I run 2-3s will this ESC be able to handle it and he said he doesn't know but its supposed to. Supposed to? I understand every setup is different but I was surprised how rude this guy was, he even said he wasn't trying to be a jerk and I believe him but instead of trying to understand my need he as talking all over me. I decided to hang up and talk to my friends on the forum-please help if I can make this work or should I return the ESC Motor and get the 2200 combo?

The specs for that motor say to use it with 2-4S. You can probably run it on 6S, but it will run hot and over rev. If you want to run 6S, I'd suggest returning the motor for a 2200kv.
