Hello yall, new to the hobby and wanting to know what kind on tinkering is feasible with my 18859. I ordered a brushless motor , ESC and Transmitter but I was wondering what other suggestions more experienced hobbyists would have for this platform.

Most if not any of us have that car or brand. We tend to not mess with the super Chinese stuff too often. I have a few of those off brands but can never recommend them once I have spent some time on them, they usually frustrate me when I have to work on them due to poor hardware quality.
The durability just isn’t there either.

I took a break from RC for a bit. When I returned, I was aware I had a lot to catch up on... Technology with brushless, lipo batteries... I wanted something inexpensive to learn with.
I came across a DeeRC200e. I did some quick research and found upgrade/replacement parts were avail so I bought it.
It was a VERY basic rc. I got excited to start building, replacing, upgrading. I put on new shocks, motor, battery, a bunch of bling.

What I found was this...
After waiting a month for the slow boat from China, the aluminum parts bent. The rear shock tower lasted for exactly 1 roll over. Junk.

The rest lasted not much longer.

The motor and battery were too much for the car to take. I was stripping the centers out of the spur gears on every run.

The shock upgrade was the only thing that was really helpful for performance or that improved longevity and durability.

My suggestion is for you to keep speed low. Maybe tire and shock changes but not much else.

Budget RCs are fine as long as you keep in mind that they are budget builds.

It looks like a fun little truck!

Enjoy it, have fun with it, learn with it... Just don't invest heavy into it. There are better options for a serious build.

ok I'm a fan of the HBX platforms, i dig em, their fast and tough and fast.
that being said the most common response ytour going to get is to shelve it.

it doesn't have the aftermarket support that the other brands have. its amazons basher. i have 3! lol love em

but when a part breaks i am screwed. i switched over to one of the arguably more expensive name brands because of the parts availability.

it can totally be done, but its much more difficult than doing the same repair/upgrade for a more established brand,

I have no personal experience with the specific model that you are asking about (I'm a nitro guy TBH), but my buddy has either their 1/12th or 1/14th scale brushless model and like you he bought the Haiboxing as his entry into modern electrics (brushless / LiPo) trucks and it's been durable and reliable.
The Haiboxing has been the most reliable electric truck that he owns (it prompted him to buy other trucks including larger and expensive ones).

Majin succinctly sums up my perspective.
Use the Haiboxing as your springboard into the hobby, but I think you made a good choice.
The only downside that I can see is the aftermarket support issue.

To update this. I went ahead and installed the new brush-less motor and ESC. Much faster and really good for bashing now. The diff though is plastic of course but Ill be ordering a metal one here shortly. Other then that the next upgrade will be tires (If I can find good ones that fit) and shocks. I plan to use this cheaper platform to make my mistakes and learn from. Super excited to push it and see what breaks first lol. Thanks yall for your suggestions and feedback, its very much appreciated
