I did a bunch of work on my buddies 4-wheeler a few years back, and Saturday I got a new AX10 RTR in the mail for my troubles!! I had no idea it was coming!!

Anyway, it is bone stock right now. What are some of the first things to upgrade? What do I stay away from? I like the looks of the aluminum parts, and I know on my Revo aluminum is not the best, but what about for a crawler?

If you have plastic links you need to upgrade to aluminum or delrin.

Heres a upgrade link kit.

A new EEM skid to help get rid of torque twist and moves teh links to the inside.

aluminum knuckles and c's are a good idea to start too.

You can do a 4 link servo/battery plate

Theres ALOT of stuff you need to do to make it better but theres some things to start you off.

Just go here and browse around, not really too much that can hurt ya.

new tires!!

also the stuff sng stated. i did the 4 link and eem skid, and added the alum ends. added more weight to the wheels, and get the battery down lower will help a lot!

I'm with the stuff SNG noted *apart* from the link kit. IMHO you'd be better off going for a set of straight lower *delrin* links, they slide over the rocks way better than alloy. I don't know if EEM do those, I haven't looked lately (it's no longer economical to shop in the USA from the UK as our currency went down the pan 6 months ago :( ). The Double Triangulation bottom skid is probably something I recommend to anyone looking to make a simple mod to a stock rig that will make a bug difference.

The new tyres are a good tip too, my personal pick would be some Panther Leopards with Memory foam inserts.

Also on the list would be some Losi Crawler shocks, need a bit of modding to fit but work superbly.

A decent dig will be a good competition add-on but it's not necessary for recreational crawling, and also requires a 3 channel radio.

If you really feel like going nuts the SWX chassis kits is a really nice upgrade for the Axial too, but replace the lower links, as I said above, with Delrin plastic ones of the same length.

There's a ton you can do and it's up to you to find the balance that works for you. It's taken me 2 seasons to get mine to my liking but now it's there it's an awesome go-anywhere rig.

Oh, also prop rings, to stop the plastic yokes popping when you get bound up. Also be sure to go around and threadlock any metal-metal screw connections. Usual ones to cause issues are the grub screws that hold the pinions onto the outdrives on the gearbox outputs and axle inputs. Threadlock em and nip them up tight (but careful you don't strip the hex out).

Id say get MIP drivelines and skip the collars. They always wear out fast and the drivelines pop off.

X2 on the MIP drive lines, they will out perform the stock ones big time. and everything that SNG has recomended will help dramaticly.

Thanks for the help. I've got the double reverse skidplate, 2 - four-link servo plates, silver color change kit with the hardware upgrade kit and the rear steer kit on order (for tomorrow anyway). Anything I should add or remove?

It came with metal drive shafts installed (not sure what kind) and both axles are locked, it also came with Pro-Line Flat Iron tires.

Sounds like you got a good start of things. Flat Irons will work for you for now, they are a great overall tire imo for most type of rock.

Sounds like your heading in the right direction, the only thing I'd do different is loose the rear steer setup and get a dig setup instead.
