i remember reading somewhere that theres this tool for when you want to take the flywheel off can someone tell me what its called. and where i can find it online.

If you need a gear puller, Id suggest going to the local auto parts store and asking for a battery terminal puller. They are about 3-4 dollars

To piggy back on this. What do you guys use to keep the crank from spinning? I've seen those tools that you screw into the glow plug opening but dont like that idea at all because of the stress it would put on the piston, wristpin, conrod, crankshaft, etc...

When I swapped clutch assemblies recently I just used a pair of vise grips with a flat claw and used like 4 paper towels folded 10 times to provide cushion so as to not score the shaft.

I take off the engine, header and pipe as one unit, take the glowplug out, fill it with afterrun oil, return the plug and induce a hydrolock. You might also want to use a burnt out plug to keep from harming the coil from the compression.

well its the same thing tho. your stopping the crank by putting pressure on the piston. Hmmm Maybe I need to invent a new tool ...a reverse one way bearing or something.... or jusy keep using vise grips

i grab the flywheel with a pipe wrench and grab the clutch nut with a pair of pliers. got the pipe wrench tightened down in my left hand, and the pliers in my right, and with my right hand i just twist counterclockwise. works for me and havent had ne problems.

later

*EDIT* Also back in the day, i use to take the pullstart off, and flip my one way bearing. so i would grab the one way bearing and the clutch nut both with a pair of pliers and that would work. but i got too lazy to actually take the pullstart off, so i just grab the flywheel.

Flathead screwdriver has never failed me.

thanks for all the replies it saves some money to ask first.

lol...I use a flat head screw driver all the time. I thought I was the only one..
I'm glad you posted it first.

Another thing I have used to stop the piston from moving, when removing a flywheel, is the handle end of a toothbrush. It has give to it.

Yes, go through the exhaust port, with a paper towel wrapped around the handle of a toothbrush a couple of times and you have a soft piston lock tool.

However, I use my Durratrax piston lock tool and have never fried a piston, con rod or wrist pin.

I think the important thing to note is that the piston is in BOTTOM DEAD CENTER with the tool installed. I think the pure physics of it all, being bottom dead center, disallowes so much torque as if the piston were half way up etc..

But like I said, I've never had a problem using one.
