I've got a 12R XS in my new R40 and I'm having a hell of a time getting the thing started. Seems that the flywheel always wants to get stuck at TDC and I've really gotta put some force onto the flywheel it to get it to spin down to the bottom of the stroke. I am using 2 1500Mah 7.2v batteries in my starter box, and am wondering if I need more juice than that..and if it would be better to upgrade to a 12v GelCell battery for that extra oomph....any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm becoming VERY frustrated with this whole starterbox engine only experience.

Especially now that it's colder outside, you might want to try warming up the head with a hairdryer so that the top of the sleeve will expand a little and make it easier to turn over. What I also tried doing, especially when the engine was still fresh, is take out the glow plug, put a couple of drops in the cylinder and let the starter box turn the engine for all it's worth! Once warmed up, start it as usual. the sleeve should expand enough to let it turn easier. Also make sure the piston is at the bottom of the stroke when starting. One other thing, you didn't say what box you're using so I'll gneralize, Play around with the way your car is sitting on the rubber wheel. Sometimes it's just the position of the flywheel on the rubber wheel.

Just take it easy and relax. I was in the same boat as you trying to get my new mill broken in with a starter box that I bought from a member here. Nitromaniac said it all when I was going through my frustrations ... step back, calm down and try again, go through the check list again and keep trying.

You may also try loosening the glow plug a couple of small turns. This will allow the piston to turn over easier. I have had to do this before. Later

I have that problems sometimes especially since it is colder so I remove the glow plug and add a FEW drops of ARO. Don't go crazy with it as this can hinder you from starting it! Put the plug back in and cycle the flywheel till the piston is at the bottom of the sleeve. Good Luck !!
