Engine Problem

I need help!!!

When I pull my pullstart nothing happens. It pulls out without turning the engine and goes back in without any problems. There is no resistance at all on the chord. I thought it might be the one-way bearing, so I changed that but it still won't work. The back plate was loose a couple of weeks ago. I tightened it and everything was fine, but when I took the pull assembly apart this last time, the backplate was loose again. I took it off and there was a little pin that was laying inside the block. I assumed that it went into the piston and thought that would solve all my problems (I made sure the little spring was back in the piston as well). I get the click sound when the pull chord retracts, but that's about it. No tension on the pull chord at all when I pull it out.

Any ideas!?! I really want to get this thing running again without buying a new engine right now.

P.S.- while I was fiddling with it I actually did break the pull starter so I have to fix that too.

Only thing I could think of is your compression went to hell. Pull the cooling head of and then pull the pullstart and see if the piston is going up and down like it should

I think the piston is moving. Does that backplate need some type of sealant on it before I close it up again? Maybe that's why I have no compression.

This has happened several times before to me with various engines and various pullstarts.

First - the little pin u found goes into the bottom of the connecting rod. the spring goes behind it. this pin connects the connecting rod to the pull start mechanism. 9 times out of 10 - the reason it is doing what it is doing can be attributed to this little pin not making proper conection with the pullstart.

Try this - remove the pullstart, but not the backing plate from the engine. try to twist that little rod that portrudes from the rear of the engine and goes inside the one-way bearing in the pullstart. if it twists freely, that means that it is not connected the connecting rod and the pin is your problem. if it is difficult to turn, and it is still connected to the piston/rod then u know that the problem is in the pull start.

if the rod twists easily - remove backing plate from engine. that rod will be connected to a saucer like metal disc. the disc has a groove in it and this is where the pin is supposed to connect. make sure the pin is portruding far enough out of the connecting rod. u may need to replace this pin and the spring that sits behind it in the hole it slides into.

if the rod does not spin freely - this means that the problem is in the pull start. replace pull start.


hope this helps - as i said - i have had this problem several times before, and almost every time it was the fact that the pin was not touching the disc. this was usually caused by the spring being worn out.

I've heard a few examples that the spring for the pin has broken.. so if that is your issue find the missing pieces.. i heard a bic lighter spring will work as a replacement, the last few with this issue got put on backorder for long periods of time by hpi...

Hey, you guys are great. Thanks so much for the help. I'll check my lhs and see if they have that. Hopefully I'll have it running by Monday, or so. It's actually supposed to stop raining by then.
