Hi- I have my Savage LE for two weeks now. Just finished with my forth tank of break in and still it refuses to go full throttle. :surrender Can someone help. Everytime I pull the trigger to past half throttle it feels like its choking and don't want to push any more. I have plenty of blue smoke coming out from the exhaust. Also, I have not touch the LSN at all. I have not been able to go up into 2nd or 3rd gear yet (this is how slow the truck is going) The manual said that factory setting is for HSN is flush but I have read other website saying that it is suppose to be 4 1/2 turns out from all the way in. (but 4 1/2 turns out is not flush) Furthermore, manual says not to turn clockwise more than 1 1/2 turns. Please help.....

Try adjusting your low end needle about 1/16th of a turn leaner (or set to flush, whichever is the leaner of the two). It won't take much. Also, don't be afraid to start leaning it down; by now it should be pretty close to broken in. Just go in 1/16th turns at a time. Start with the high end, then worry about the low end later.

I just started breaking in an F4.1 - I know your pain, lol. I got the first tank done - that thing purrrred for the whole tank, didn't die once, and didn't need clearing out. Then it started to rain like 5 minutes after I shut it off. It hasn't stopped since.

HPI knows how to make a good engine; they can be finicky on the carb settings tho. Just go slow, and you'll get it.

4th tank! You still need to run it a few more tanks to break it in at minimum. What is your temperature? During break in, you should not be going that fast to go ful throttle or even in the next gear. You want the Piston and sleeve to break in properly. The more tanks you run, the better it will be. Always let it cool with the piston at Bottom Dead Center. Apply some After Run Oil after each time you run and let it cool.

Thanks guys- I always here about having the pistons on the bottom but I could never figure out how to do that. I know that it has to be done manually but where is the piston? Everything looks so compact. So I should not be going full throttle for another few tanks?

oh yeah, my highest temp i got up to is about 245 degrees

During Break in NO. The piston is internal. You have to clean the oraface around the glow plug. Once clean, remove the glow plug. You should be able to use your Rotostartoror the pulstart to manually turn the crank. You will see the piston go up and down.Once at the bottom that is bottom dead center. You can actually feel the piston once at the bottom and once at the top.

ill add this,

once you find the bottom of the piston stroke, use a permanet marker to mark the flywheel or scribe a line on the flywheel with a sharp tool...then you will know when your at the bottom without taking out the glowplug from then on.

ok- so i'll need to take out the glow plug and then use the rotostart to get the piston to the bottom. Got it.

I can't stress enough that the oraface around the glow plug needs to be debris/dirt free so nothing falls inside the engine.

The only reason I said that it should be close to being broken in is the sheer volume of the savage tank, vs the volume of a buggy tank. However, closer to 4 tanks, at the minimum, should be good.

I'll second what Retarded Pilot said; the mark on the flywheel is perhaps the best thing you can do.

When you cycle the engine over to get the piston at bottom dead center, the key is to actually get it as close as you can. It doesn't have to be spot-on, just down out of the pinch zone.

With the glow plug out you should be able to turn the flywheel with your finger instead of using the roto start, I think it will be easier plus you can feel when the piston gets to the bottom.
