I just bought an infrared thermometer and am wondering if I should be pointing it right at the cooling head, or getting it right down in there where the piston would be. At the cooling head I`m getting around 270, but if I get it right down in there, it`s around 300 (immediatly after some serious bashing, then it quickly drops). It seems like it`s a little hot, but it really screams and seems to run best at this setting. It`s about "2 hours" on the other side of a "lean bog". I just don`t want to ruin anything. It is a .21 engine.

You should be able to get max performance out of your .21 and be around 220. 300 is very hot ! Check your temp next to your glow plug . That engine want last long @ those temps.

Will do! Just keep richening the HSN, right?
 
There are other factors that play a part in engine temp besides tuning alone. Environment being one, if its a warm to hot day, the engine will heat up more, if the fuel is a higher nitro content, the engine will run at higher temp due to the neccesary tuning. Terrain also plays a part. If running on grass, the engine has to do more work than it would if running on ashpalt. However, if you decide to do something about it, then a quick check on the NOVA RC website should yield a superb new head for better cooling ability for around $39.

I Fitted one to the O.S 30 engine on my EB4 and the temps dropped to an unbelievable level. I've never looked back and i will definately use the NOVA head on my other nitro r/c sleds
