Hey guys, I'm gonna be making the dive back into the game world a little bit. I'm tired of looking at the messed up picture our old DVD player is putting out so it's time to replace it. Considering a 40 gig PS3 is about the same cost as a stand alone blu ray player I think it's a no brainer. So anyways, I'm probably gonna pick up one game and was hoping to get some input on the couple of titles that have my attention. My preference for games are race sims or of the like and right now I'm considering...

  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue- Been a big fan of series for a looong time and have no doubt I would enjoy this. But do I want to try something a little different?
  • F1 Championship Edition- Looks great, sounds great. How's the gameplay? I've read that it's adjustable from beginner level to full sim (which is what I enjoy most). Worth the $$?
  • Dirt- This seemed to get a lot of t.v. promo when it first came out. Hit or Hype?
  • Wipeout HD- Just for something different. Looks great, probably has great music for something less serious. Continuous fun or completely lame?

Lessen, I must say that I absolutely LOVED Dirt. I have it on the XBox 360, and I was actually surprised how much I liked it. I HIGHLY reccomend it. It's not one of those games that you finish in a day either, there is really a lot to it and you get to drive so many different vehicles.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is awesome, the graphics are nice, it seems so realistic. The only problem is that they took out the upgrades, but you can tune your car after you complete A, B, and C.

I just got back from my morning outing and window shopping. Neither of the two places near me have Wipeout HD so that's out, even though I was pretty interested in that. I know GT5 is basically just a sneak preview for the finalized GT5 so I'm not sure I would be happy with that as my only game for 'me'. Thanks for the heads up on that coby. I think I may just wait for the real deal. I think it's between F1 and Dirt and I'm leaning toward F1 right now, maybe I"ll pick up Dirt next month. I think I'm gonna get LEGO Star Wars for the wife and myself. Something on the less serious side and adventurous that isn't too graffic for my 2 year old to see.

I think I would just be dissapointed in anything before the final release of GT5 as I've always loved the other ones, and I would expect nothing less when I buy the new one.

Lessen, I would advise getting the F1 game first. I know you'll love it, and you may want to rent Dirt first and see if you like it, that's what I did, and I turned out to like it more than I though t I would, but I think you'll like f1 a lot more.

Well, you know what happens when you can't make a decision and they're both in your hands.... :D

Thanks for the input fellas! The ultimate in on-road and off-road should give me something to do when r/c has burnt me out :)

The new release of Grand Theft Auto has outsold every new release of any game, CD, DVD, music or movie release EVER, with 500 million in it's first week.

i heard its mostly all talk.
the new GTA gamer i guess isnt what everyone though

saw some bad reviews somewhere and have heard bad compliments
about it.

PS3 FTW.

I'll be getting mine REAL soon

You know, honestly I have no idea what that series if even about or what genre it is. I don't think it's something I'm into though.

If you have time, maybe you wanna play online someday? I like how it's free :D.

yeah, I think that's pretty cool that the online service is free. It really makes the hefty cost of the system seem reasonable.. if you use it that is. I don't have mine setup for internet yet though. I need to look into what I need to get online with it. I know it needs to be hooked up via an ethernet line but that has to come from somewhere... I suppose I need another modem or something... or I could get Wifi on my main computer I think. I dunno.. got some research to do.

You can just put a wireless router on the modem that you've already got, and then Connect the PS3 wirelessly, or if you're PS3 is near the computer, simply use a regular router and run a network cable. I went ahead and ran network cable under the house into all the main rooms so I'm good to go anywhere.

if you are lookin for race sims, need for speed prostreet is a great game, it has a lil bit of everything, except offroad driving, i would sell it to you cheap....

I don't like the NFS series that much either. I had NFSU for PS2 back in the day and I used to get sooo mad when I'd be ahead than I'd hit a freakin' tree in the median. :nono: I find that I like race games that are either far left or far right, "True" race sims, or race games that are geared more toward the adventure aspect than technical racing.

yeah, I think I'll have to look into the wireless router thing... is that expensive?

I've got a router I'll give you, and then you could get the wireless bridge that would hook up to the playstation for around 50 or 60 bucks new.

What's a wireless bridge? How much for the router? What is a router anyways?... like a transmitter of some sort?

Charlie, your right man. I'm really diggin F1. I'm not very good at all right now but I just have to learn the tracks and stuff. I've just been running 3 lap quick races in order to try different tracks and controller setups. I attempted tilt steering a couple times but I just can't shake the tendency to use the buttons for the functions I've been used to for so many years now. Tilt steering is pretty cool and using the R2 for throttle is great because of the longer throw of the button but I would have a real hard time trying to make the change. I'm sure I could if I wanted but I realized that's it's not even natural for me to tilt the controller for steering. I've never been one of those people who wing the controller all over the place trying to get something to happen even though it's pointless (as it were). At any rate, it looks great and sounds AWESOME! I've come to prefer the BTA markers instead of the driving line as an aid right now until I get used to the tracks. The only one I'm familiar with is Monaco, thanks to Gran Turismo :)

A router simply take an ethernet line (like the one coming from the broadband modem) and allows you to split it into other line. If you remember the old school phone lines, you can just put a splitter on a line and hook up two phones. Because of the way that data is transferred through an ethernet line, you can't really just split it into two lines. So with a router, you have an input that the ethernet line that is in your computer right now will go into. And then there's like 5 outputs where you can hook up other devices, such as other computers, game system, anything that plugs into ethernet. A wireless router is the same thing, has the input and outputs, but it also sends out a WiFi signal. A laptop has a built in WiFi card, so it will pick up the signal automatically. But with something that doens't have WiFi, you plug a bridge into the ethernet port, so the device doesn't know that there is not a hard line connected to the bridge. The wireless router acts as a transmitter, and the brige acts like the receiver basically. I hope I made this easy to understand without insulting your massive intelligence.

Routers can be had on ebay for around $40 and up, and you can buy one at Wal-Mart for around $60 to $80. The bridges are priced around the same price, usually a lil less than the router. I got lucky and had someone give me several wireless routers that they weren't using anymore, so I would send you one if you decide to go that route.

Here's an example of the bridge that would connect to the PS3 http://cgi.ebay.com/Belkin-802-11g-...ryZ91357QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

There's actually cheaper than I thought they would be, but that's two items that are priced very reasonable and would work good together. You don't have to at all, but I usually try to stick with the same brand stuff which usually makes it truly plug and play.

PS3 Flat out sucks.

360 is better.

Did you know that they put info on the blue ray disk multipul times so the laser reader dosent have to move so far?

Its a moot point to even have blue ray.
