i was flagged down by 2 guys yesterday afternoon, one was mentally handicap and the other was his brother. They pulled out a notebook and the handicap guy came up to me and asked me if he could hug me. I was a little taken aback, but agreed, and he gave me a big ole hug. So after that, his brother came up to me, and asked if i would mid signing their notebook.

As i flipped through the pages i saw hundreds and hundreds of signatures, all police officers from all around the US. They are taking all year traveling around the country, so his brother (the handicap one) could hug cops.

No one knows why he asked to do this, but i thought it was pretty cool.

uhhh..... thats kinda odd... lol your a good guy for agreeing though. I know alot of cops who would mase someone for trying to hug them no matter what disability they had. Then again I live in cali so....

hey alpine touching story but i got a question that is right on this topic for you, my buddy and i went into a gas station one night a year or so ago, just hammered, and my buddy was joking around with a police inside the store and long story short my buddy wanted to hug him but the guy said it was illigal to touch a cop in anyway at all...is this true?

umm, if you just like run up and grab one, its considered assault. And if i had a drunk guy just walk up to me and ask, id probably smack him in the back of the head and arrest him for drunk in public for trying to be a funny butthead, but this guy was pretty genuine, and touched my heart.

Have you hugged a cop today????

I'm with you man. I work with a lot of handicapped people and get hugs all the time. It's weird at first. But ultimately you realize that they really appreciate what you do in the simplest of ways. Those are usually the patients that make my day.

+1 on Candymans' post. My mom worked with handicapped young adults at the local college for a while. There are some that have genuine behavioral issues (violent, rude, etc). There are others that are total lovers.

My guess is that he probably idolizes policemen (like some young kids idolize sports heroes), and while he (obviously) can never become one, he wants to show gratitude towards them. I personally think that is a great thing, and very heartwarming.

It's a shame that there aren't more folks out there that share his views towards the men and women out there protecting us.

I dont know if anyone has hear these but a few months ago a guy here went on a shooting spree and shoot a couple of cops one was retired from the US Air Force, if i recall he was pretty high up there. well this cop died and now you see bumper stickers that say "Thank A Cop"....The guy who did these is one of are customers son

I think the Thank a cop bumper stickers are a good thing i have a few motorcycle cops as friends and the story they tell me...

so Thanks to all the cops out there for protecting us

i grew up a cops son. my dad was a cop for a long time and he would always tell stories about how he got shot, stabbed, and beat up. but he always went to work day in and day out for 25 years. it strives me to be what i am today. i have nothing but respect for people that put there lives on the line to help someone.

I've always wanted to be a cop but its just not in the stars for me.

i think maybe that handy cap person wanted to be a cop or something. maybe thats why he wanted to hug them or something. thats the first time i ever heard of someone doing that. but it sounds pretty cool. glad you helped the guy out with a hug. thats great.

That was very cool of you to do what you did for him Alpine, I am a security officer and at the site where I work every day at about the same time I have a mentaly handicapped guy that no matter what if we see each other he ethier has to wave to me if I am on a break or shake my hand if I'm out patroling which I have no problem doing it just kind of seems to make his day...

Alpine, that is just sweet and kudos for you on giving him the hug. Best part, though, was that there were multiple pages in that notebook of signatures of all the cops who hugged him.

There was a Dave Matthews video a couple of years ago where a weird looking guy was on the streets of NY asking for hugs.. same kind of principle. People have grown cold and unattached.

Kudos to you, Alpine... Kudos.
*A hug for you*
