ok so I'm breaking in a new bigblock, and I'm having a problem getting it above 190.. now i no temps are a bit diffrent on a bigblock. HPI says 250 is as high as it should ever be. i have a baby sock over the head and i can't get above 190
think this is ok? or what.. its a K5.9:\

I take it since you're using a sock that it's a bit chilly? When I broke in my K 4.6 it was around 50-60 outside. It took a long because I was using a heat gun to keep temps up. My first 2 tanks ran at a high idle on a block with heat gun keeping temps right at 200. This was suggested to me by a wise man at the LHS. I also had to slightly lean mine out to keep it running.

ok well i had to up the idle screw to keep it running by it self. its about 37 degrees out right now, should i lean it a bit? i dont have a heat gun to get above 200, and the settings are factory out the box i havent touched them besides the idle screw to keep it running

Lean the LSN to bring up the temps while idling. Make sure you still have a 'mist' of oil hitting your fingertip from the exhaust.

ok does it matter how many times i idle a tank full on the block? i wanna break this thing in right its the last rig I'm aloud to buy lol.. wife is on the warpath, and I'm broke

ok here is a weird thing happening.. it runs hotter with the sock OFF the head, and runs cooler with the sock ON the head.. can someone explain that? still can't hit 200 I'm gonna pick up a heat gun tomorrow and try again.. does it matter how many tanks i idle on the block before i acculy run this rig on the ground??

If the instructions have a break in procedure, I would follow that and nothing else. Also, 37 is way to cold for breaking an engine in. I can tell how hard it is on my well broke in 2.5 maxx. It runs a heck of a lot better at 55 then 35. That's with acceptable temps(210-240) and a decent tune. Do what the manufacturer says.

190F is fine for the outside temps you're in. As it gets cooler outside, your running temps drop. 190F will produce a perfectly fine break-in. Run the engine where it wants to run. No two engines run at the same temps, especially RTR engines.

I read that the recommended break in temperature is 60-90 degrees lol - you might be a bit cool there! :)

That's the only red light I would need to see. If the directions are not followed, don't be surprised if there's problems in the future. It may work out just fine, but it is definitely not worth the chance of breaking a motor in wrong. I feel ya, though. Everybody's stirr crazy!

acculy i dont no were he got 60-90 HPI instructions say 40 is fine and tells you to wrap the head in tinfoil..

You should be straight, then. I would seriously consider waiting for warmer weather, though. Follow the instructions, and best of luck! Let us know how it goes.
