i dont own a temp gun but I'm fairly new to rc and didnt see the need for them. but I'm starting to see them mentioned alot in this hobby. are they that important because i dont want to go spend 40 bucks if there not, what are your opinions on this?

Yes, they are very important in my opinion. You don't want your engine to run too hot, and then you're out spending 150 dollars a week :p They also help you get it tuned in right, so yes, they are important.

ok, thanks is there any good ones or are they all the same?

Sometimes even an engine that is running well, sounds good and has plenty of smoke will be spiking temps due to an air leak or drive train binding. Keeping an eye on temps is just one more tuning aid to make things easier on you and less costly down the line.

I use one I spent $60 at radio shack many years ago.

Not sure of any of the cheaper ones for accuracy or consistency. I know a lot of guys buy one of these:
