Or your clutch spring broke. Pretty cheap fix to get new shoes, they come with a spring I believe.- olds97_lss

Did you try sealing the carb/backplate at all with RTV? I know some say don't bother, but if I have an engine that has a wandering tune when it heats up, I'll tear it down, clean it and RTV the carb neck/cinch bolt/banjo fitting and backplate, then try again. This covers sealing pretty good...- olds97_lss
