Start by leaving for very short periods of time. When you leave, say, "I'll be back" and when you return, don't get him excited. Just walk in and say, "Good boy". Leave for one or two minutes at a time, and pretty soon he'll know you'll be back. Slowly start to extend the time as he adjusts...
