Tower hobbies .40 nitro aircraft engine. Is it gummed up?

I've seen worse. Strip it all down, take the piston, rod, crankshaft and front bearing (if there is one. I know its a bushing in the rear) and soak it all in nito fuel for a day or two and then take a brass brush and scrub all the parts down real good.

You may need to seal it, especially the backplate. Taking it apart may have created an air leak.

So the engine was gummed up, you did a complete tear down and cleaning, put it back together and now it runs but it runs like crap? Did I understand correctly? Sorry the details are a little fuzzy to me. Define running like crap.

Engine bearings are a bit different though, especially the rear bearing as it doesn't have shielding. Its been a long time since I've been in a nitro engine but I dont believe the back of the front bearing has any shielding either IIRC

I agree, replace the bearing. Generally once the front bearing starts leaking that means its going bad. Id probably go ahead and replace the rear bearing too if you can find it.
