First of all, please be kind for such a newbie question.
I am just getting back into RC cars after decades of absence. I got out of it after my boys lost interest. One of them visited a couple of weeks ago and he had gotten back into it and had a Aarma Granite and we had a ball with the thing so of course I had to get one too and it is a blast to play with.

I went to a local track yesterday (dirt) and they we running mostly Associated buggies and stadium trucks.

I am considering getting an Associated RC10B74.1D. This is a 4WD Buggy, I just love the look of them.

My question is, is there a better car in the RTR category or should I just spend the time and money and get the RC10B74.1D and build it up. I don't want to spend money on something that won't be able to compete if I decide to really get into racing and I want to have something that will hold up and last. Also can the RC10B74.1D be easily converted to run on carpet tracks?

Thanks
Dave

Which track? If it's Walt's, they mainly only run Associated stuff. You can't go wrong with an Associated buggy, but, they can get pricey. As for an RTR, i really can't think of anything race ready, although, others might have some suggestions there. You might want to also check out the TLR (Team Losi Racing) stuff as well.

The Associated buggies have always been some of my favorites, but I never owned one of their 4wd buggies. But the 2wd versions were always just so darn quick and nimble, I can't imagine they would drop the ball on a 4wd version.

A kit is far superior to any RTR out there. There's no real reason to buy an RTR and get electronics that you are just going to replace, especially if you get into racing. Plus you learn all there is to know about the car putting it together yourself.

The Losi and Tekno buggies are the go to racers here as well. If I were to choose one of the three, I would have to go with Tekno. They are respected as being near the top of the food chain.

If you go with one of these, I'd recommend Tekin or Castle electronics, but you might want to get with the guys at the track and see what they run first, just in case rules keep you at certain specs.

Welcome in @Dave NY , my advice would be, stay away from the RTR if you are going to get serious about racing. As mentioned above, you will pretty much have to completely rebuild it if you go with RTR. That's a lot of money you would spend. I would go with Tekno.

What Losi and Tekno buggies would you recommend that are comparable to the Associated RC10B74.1D?

WickedFog,

I was looking at both of those in fact. What would you recommend for the balance of the necessary items like controllers, tires (mounted) servos, ESC, batteries, motor, gears, etc. I want to make sure I get everything and quality items so I don't waste time energy and money. There aren't any hobby shops real close by, about 1+ hours in any direction so it's not like I can make a short trip to get something I forgot. Also, should I get brushless motor?

Definitely go sensored Brushless.

For the other stuff, I would decide which car you want and download and read the manual. The Tekno for example has a lot of optional parts like 32P gearing, fan mounts, shock pistons, etc. It also tells you tire and wheel recommendations. Once you do a little more digging, if you have any more questions, come ask away.

There are also some build vids of these buggies on YouTube with a lot of useful info.

you have a giant selection of 4wd 1/10 scale buggies. does the track or local hobby store carry parts that's going to be 1 of your main factors.. there's lC racing team Xray(my favorite) and a few others.. do you know how to set a rc up? weight .motor so on. along with what type of battery will fit and esc/motor along with gearing and tire...depending on tracks location and tracks prep it will get more dusty as race day gets longer so tires will b a factor. I've raced and changed tires 3 times in a day 2 qualifiers the main.just some fyi

WickedFog,

Why that particular Servo and not 1 from tower hobbies? I am thinking about post the build on here to give everyone a total newbie experience and so they can follow along.

I will post the entire order list before I commit to it to see if I missed anything.

I am leaning toward the Tekno right now.

Get a couple losi mini B or mini t, get a stack of cones on Amazon, make a track out in the driveway and give er hell. Best fun I've ever had. You don't need to go anywhere for fun.

That particular servo is out of stock everywhere that I looked except that last one on Amazon. There are lots of servos that would do good in it. But you didn't seem to have a budget, and based on the last Tekin servo I just installed, holy hell they super nice.

Here is what I believe I need to build and run the Tekno EB410.2 4WD Buggy. Am I missing anything?

I got wheels and tires for both Carpet and Dirt. Did I miss anything to get the Buggy fully functional?

Thanks for all the great input to date.

Dave

That servo is more made for monster trucks and truggies. The speed is .12 @ 8.4v, which is ok, but not great if you're gonna race it, which based on the tires you have selected I assume you will be. Look for something around 250 oz/in torque at 7.4v, and <.1 speed at 7.4v. Just my opinion here. I like my buggies, and the steering servo needs to be fast on my buggies.

That radio sucks. Sorry, I forgot to suggest a radio earlier. Grab a Flysky GT3B or GT3C. A much better radio, for half the price. I avoid Spektrum ground based stuff and their servos like the plague.

Everything else looks good. I'd also grab some fluids. Diff fluid, shock oil, and a tube of green slime to lube the o-rings in the shocks and prevent leakage. Oh, and maybe a tub of Mobil1 synthetic grease. The red stuff.

Do you have a good charger? The Hota D6 Pro can be grabbed for $118 at www.racedayquads.com. it is a great charger for the money.

Oh, and if you are indeed racing this, I would suggest you go to the track, ask questions about motor specs for the 4wd 1/10 buggy classes they run. Some tracks have rules for what motors you can run. Some racers are tight lipped. You have been warned lol.

WickedFog,
It appears the radio you suggest is no longer available, what else would you suggest? I do have a charger that will work.

The GT3B is everywhere. Look on Amazon

Or if you want ABS, the GT5 has that.

Or if you want a really nice radio, look at Futaba. But bring your wallet 😉 But those Flysky radios are the best bang for the buck.

Rtr wouldn't do any good in events or track days. You want your best bang for your buck then it'll be by going with a kit. The kit is better in the end you get to learn your car and its just better quality of parts when it comes to kits.

Team associated have some nice kits that go together very well, alternatively tekno tho in my view is very good for racing and just in general made well good kits.

I have 3 tekno kits built already and they are just tanks and the quality of the parts and durability is very high up there.

Just ordered the radio from Amazon, delivery expected 4/6/22

Dont be surprised if guys at Jerry's recommend the Radiolink over the Flysky stuff. I use both the FS GT3B and GT3C, and am always getting nagged by guys around here about how much better radiolink stuff is. Some of the guys around here are even selling their old FS radios dirt cheap.

I am sure it is like the GM, Ford, Dodge folks, some swear by em the rest swear at em. Of course GM is the best, you just can teach those other poor souls anything.
